Hi Moms!

I just found out today that my husband has a good job opportunity in Birmingham Alabama. I've never lived in Alabama, so I'm wondering what you moms think about the city as a place to raise a family and what are the good neighborhoods/areas to look at living in if we decide to take it?

What can I do next?

My aunt and my 2 cousins and their families live in Hoover. My grandparents live in Alabaster/Pelham. I know Hoover is a good area with good schools - my cousins grew up there as well.

Hi! I live outside of B'ham. If you're wanting to be in B'ham city itself, Homewood is the only place I'd suggest for a family. But if you're wanting to live outside the city, Hoover is nice and has good schools compared to other parts of the area. Also, Trussville is a small city that's basically an extentsion of B'ham (btw, all the "cities" are very confusing at first b/c they over-lap, are called by each other names and many people call it all B'ham).

However, I do have to add, I'm not sure where you would be moving from but Alabama schools are NOT the greatest. Lots of budget cuts this year, and the county is seriously considering bankruptcy this year. It's Jefferson County btw if you want to look it up.

I'm from Louisiana myself, have lived in Mississippi, Nevada and Florida, and this is my least favorite. VERY pretty (the mountains) and lower cost of living, but that's about the best I can say compared to other places I've lived.

UPDATED-

Just saw you're from Largo, I lived in Pinellas Park, outside of St. Pete. MUCH preferred Florida. I liked the schools alot better, the weather and just the general city itself.

I live in North Alabama, but have spent a good amount of time in Birmingham. Check out al.com and read the Birmingham News content to get a feel for the city. They really have quite a few museums, etc... for children. Years ago, when my husband and I were considering moving to the Birmingham area, we focused our home search in the Fultondale/Gardendale area. It's was a quick drive to downtown and situated North of the city.

I am a transplant to the South from out West and consider myself fortunate to be in Alabama. I can't imagine raising my children anywhere else. :)

My father's family is from Birmingham. Great city, awesome zoo and wonderful museums. They always lived in Homewood which is an area of Birmingham. I think it's a great place to raise a family.
