How Do You Make Friends When You Stay at Home with Toddlers?

I am originally from Indiana, so my sisters, friends, and family are all still there. We moved here 1 year ago from Prattvill, and I still haven't made any friends. I tried the local pools, playgrounds, Walmart. But the other mom's look at me like I am crazy for talking to them. In Indiana, you pretty much are friends with anyone you speak to. I don't know if it is just the area, or if it is me. Anyway, I just want to make a friend, who stays at home, who is normal, and who can share my same loneliness with me. Give me some advice please before I go crazy. Thanks S.

What can I do next?

Look up your the closest MOPS group! I know there is one in Trussville and I'm sure there are some on Birmingham! Also signing up for Kindermusik (the Pink House has classes in B'ham) or dance classes (Children's Dance Foundation)or going to your library each week at story time goes a long way to making new mommy friends. Women's daytime bible studies are also great. Look up Bible Study Fellowship or/and Community Bible Study online and find a class near you! They have classes for the kids too so no worries about childcare. I hope this helps...

I am having the same problem. I just moved here from Florida less than a year ago. I have had the same problems, where you talk to other moms and they look at you like you are an alien. I am in the Homewood area and stay at home with my 14 month old son. I love Walmart also and we go to the library and the park. If you like you can email me at ____@____.com, maybe we can meet one day.

I've been living here two years and have a hard time making friends - my shyness could have something to do with it. I can't even seem to make friends with my daughters friends parents (this one father invited me to join his gang but they were way to wild for me). I do have friends in other states but its not the same as having people close by. Go ahead and email me, if you want . . .

I don't stay at home but I have a friend that is a stay at home mommy to 2 but just had the 3rd boy. She does this MOMs group and I met her from Freecycle (which has locations all over the US or world but we were in Birmingham). I am also in several groups on yahoo like Momsinalabama and bamabums, we chitty chat and several have met one another that live close and we are planning several gettogethers too for the ones around Birmingham and then the ones from other areas of alabama meet up and whatnot....

Anyway What area are you living in now? I can use a good friend, I just lost a good friend or so I thought she was a good friend but she isn't and I havent talked to her since May 30 and we were friends since 7th grade. It is quite sad but I am getting over it.

Email me sometime, my email is ____@____.com

I remember so well what that feels like. I would suggest you go to either www.mops.org or Moms Club Int'l website and find a moms group close by. Most have playgroups to join and that is where you will meet moms and have the opportunity to develop lasting friendships. All moms need the support you are looking for. You are right - it is very hard to develop relationships, other wise. I joined a MOPs - Mothers of Preschoolers group that meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Inverness Vineyard Church, it is located on Valleydale Road across from Spain Park High School. MOPS is a mothers group and it has play groups that meet weekly. If that isn't close by - try the web address above to find another one. It is worth making the effort to go!!If you can't find a similar group try looking a church websites for churches that are close to you. They may have playgroups and moms groups as well.

Blessings - hang in there,
D.
