My son started pulling up to stand about 2 weeks ago. He also has gotten 4 teeth in the past 2 weeks. He has been sleeping through the night since May except for when teething then has about a week of difficulty and begins sleeping through night again when they break through. I am hardly getting any sleep. He is waking 2-3 times a night. I used to be able to ignore him, and he would find his binky and go back to sleep. Now he pulls up in his crib and stands there and goes "mom mom mom" How can I get us both back on track with sleeping through the night.?

Make sure to give him some tylenol before he goes to sleep.
Try hylands teething tablets also. they will help him feel better.they are also all natural. do not put him in the bed with you, that will be a hard habit to break. if he is waking up 3-4 hours after he has gone to bed give him some more tylenol if you think he is in pain. this too shall pass. take it easy.

My son did this for a while too. I think it was a combination of night time separation anxiety and teething. And I cannot stand to sit and listen to him cry! At first, I would go in and take him out of the crib and try to rock him back to sleep, which would usually work but then he would wake up when I tried to put him back in his crib. This became exhausting! Then I decided to try laying him back down in his crib and "sleeping" on his floor where he could see me. This has worked like a charm. The first couple of times, it took a while for him to fall back to sleep but now he knows the drill and falls back to sleep within about 10-15 minutes and I can sneak out. He seems to just want to know I am there and pretending to sleep (I lay on the floor with my head on the boppy pillow, pull a blanket over me and keep my eyes closed) seems to do the trick. Good luck!

Have you tried the Hylands Teething Tablets? They may help with his teething pain. Also, I use to wet, quarter fold & freeze baby washcloths in a ziplock for chewing on for pain. I think you'll find that anytime your son reaches a developmental milestone, his sleep pattern will be interrupted at night. Make sure he gets lots of practice of his new tricks through the day!

Hi L.,

It is pretty typical for little ones to change their sleep habits as they learn more about exploring their environments. As they get older, they also "realize" they are alone when they wake and may need some comforting to know you are close by. I recommend responding to your little ones needs and going in to comfort him/her. Just remember - "its just a phase" and "this too shall pass". Those are the cardinal rules of being a parent. As your child grows and changes he will have times where he sleeps well and times when he doesn't. When my son got his 1st molars, he didn't sleep through the night for 2 months! Just comfort him, let him know you are there and he will work his way back into his good routine.

There are two schools on what to do when your child wakes to pull up: either you can go in and gently lay them back down while trying not to give any entertaining attention (you may have to do this OVER and over and over) or you can just ignore them (if you are ok with crying it out), as they will just fall in a safe heap (according to Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child). The developmental stage you are in is a rough one, but does eventually end. The important thing is to make your night visits (if you choose to do them) not so fun that your child will continue to wake for your company once these problems are resolved.
