Bad Toots from 3-Year-old

Has anyone out there had a child who seemed to pass gas constantly? My 3-year-old son is always tooting and the worse part is -- they are quite stinky! I am beginning to worry about a food allergy -- he also has had a runny nose for months. Any thoughts no matter how embarrassing would be much appreciated.

What can I do next?

That runny nose leans me toward a food allergy. And if the digestive tract is in rebellion for any reason, the odor of the toots can be awful.

On the other hand, my hubby tooted last night and the smell was so bad it literally woke me up and I had to leave the room for a while!

My 4 year old son is the same way with the tooting and smells. He thinks it is funny to do this but the rest of us do not agree. What we are working on is getting him to excuse himself from being around others and to do it in another room so we do not have to smell it as much. That seems to be working for us- as far as the smell. I just figured he was gassier than most--like his father.

How are his bowl movments. Are they regular and normal? Give him a lot of water and write down what he eats. Then i would go to a nutritionist. @ whole foods or vit cottage and ask what they think could help.
Good luck and god bless

If he's had a runny nose for months, that's not normal, and I'd take him to the doctor.

You may want to mention this to his doctor. It's true that some people are just smellier than others - it's their body chemistry. (Would you believe that some people, with a sensitive enough nose, can identify a person's gas by the smell?? eeewwww but true) However, if it's really smelly, it could be an indication of something else. Is this a recent thing or has he been like this for most of his life? That could also indicate if it's just his chemistry or something else.

It wouldn't hurt to just call the doctor during office hours to get an opinion on whether you should worry or not.

This sounds very much like a diary issue...Lactose INtolerant. Try giving him an enzyme before serving dairy products, and probiotics to his diet, and ADD MORE water and fiber to his diet...he may not be sitting on the toilet long enough for proper evacuation of the colon leaving fecal matter to ferment.

Just off the top of my head, apple juice may be the culprit. Or any other juice really, many kids have too much juice and it can cause excess gas. Apple juice is particularly bad. If your child likes to drik too much juice, start to cut it with plain water adding more water and less juice until he is just drinking water the majority of the time. Good luck!

Usually food intolerances and allergies can be discovered through the elimination diet. You can find lots of information about it online.

Hi E.,
From the moment my son was born, we jokingly called him Mr. Rumblebum. By the time he was two, we learned he was a bit lactose intolerant. I suggest speaking to your doctor to rule out any intolerance or allergies. Good luck!

it does sound like a food allergy, same thing happens with me and any type of dairy, no matter how little. runny nose could be simple cold or even him developing molars, which would also cause his acidity levels to rise and cause diaper rash, and/or bad gas.

In my family it was discovered a long time ago that when we drink milk, we get gas. Try switching to skim milk for a week and see if it helps. That's what worked for us.

Good luck.
