Babysitting Fee with Grandma in Home

This may be an unusual question, what would you pay a babysitter that has help in home? My mom hasn't been feeling well (d/t cardiac related health issues) and finds it difficult to take care of my 18 month old girl. I have been looking into a babysitter in home, but my mom still wants to help out as much as she can. She wants to be the primary caregiver when I'm away, and just wants "back-up" if she gets too tired. Any thoughts on how you would address this issue and how much would you pay a person to be "back-up"? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

With grandmas health I would have grandma be "supervisor" and other person be main care...

Pay would depend on the age of the person. If it is a child then you could get away with less than if its an adult. Also depends on the age of the child...

Do you pay grandma? Who ever does main care I would pay them the going rate... You could ask them what THEY think is reasonable... If they want the job they may lowball it...

Have a HS kid come play with your girl after school. This will give your mom a brake and won't brake your bank.

My 2 cents: The "backup" still has to take time away from their life to be there. Accordingly, she (or he) would also not be working somewhere else and earning an income while they are in your home as a "backup" I would think you would have a problem finding someone to take less than the going rate considering these factors.

It is understandable that your mom wants to do all she can and just needs help when she tires, but the person that is sitting there with her would expect to be paid a wage that is somewhat equal to what they could earn if they weren't at your home.

You are still paying someone for their time. You can't get away from a base rate, whatever you would pay a sitter normally. the only way to do it and save money, is to hire a young person, like in high school or junior high. you would be able to pay them a little less due to age, and because they don't drive, etc. since grandma is there for safety, decision making, you could go with a younger person. junior highers are perfect, because they LOVE playing with kids, and that's prob what grandma needs, someone with energy to play, play, play. and, a junior higher would be thrilled to make $5 per hour prob.
