Babies with Acid Reflux? - Grand Haven,MI

Speak to her doctor, my baby was the same way around the same age. It could possibly be the formula she is on.

hi my son who is 6 mo. has it. now when he was about two weeks he would scream for hours on end ( like a colic scream) notheing helped he also would projectil spit up all over everything ( when he did his lil body would convulse like a cross between really bad hickups and a burp. our dr. asked if he reacted more to certain foods ( im nursing) also is it in your family? my huspand has it also so im not sure if there is a coralation hope this helps if she dose have it a good thing to think of is that it most of the time gose away my son is much better now and we think he will go off the medicine soon.

My son had reflux and the best thing for him was to keep his head elevated after he ate.Put a rolled up blanket under her crib mattress or bassinet mattress.Feed her in small portions and burp alot.I would feed my son a 1/4 ounce and burp him.It takes longer to feed but it helped alot.I also had him on Enfamil Pro-sobee ready to feed formula.The powder would not get thick enough and would upset him even more..The thicker the formula the better it seemed.So the ready to feed is more expensive but so worth it... If your daughter is spitting up what looks like to be about a half on ounce or more but not spitting across the room it is acid reflux. The doctors will try and put them on baby zantac but it burns on its way down. I had to put my daughter on Good Start formula when she had that. Some parents also put a teaspoon of cereal in the bottle. I also found that using the playtex ventair bottles work great with acid reflux. Try doing everything to avoid the medicine. But if your daughter is spitting across the room then have her stomach valve check. My nephew had to have surgery on his valve because it did not close all the way and we found out by him spitting his formula across the room. Good luck and if you have any questions email me.

I feel your pain. My son spit up all the time. The doctor always just assumed I wasn't burping him enough during feedings. Finally, at one year of age, they listened. I think the thing you would have ask yourself is if your daughter is spitting up alot, in terms of volume. My son might spit up a couple ounces at a time. This is more than spitting up. Also, on occasion, your daughter might act less comfortable while laying down. Acid reflux seems to be less of a problem, so much as an annoyance. Shortly after he turned one, my son even outgrew it. Some babies do spit up more than others. And some do get reflux. The key is whether your daughter is growing and sleeping fine.

ho E. try keep her head up high after she eat for aleast a hour and see if that helps or to be on the safe side take her to her doctor

My daughter is 7 now, but when she was a baby she spit up a lot! And was also very fussy if she was going to lay down and she had eaten within an hour, unless she was in a swing, bouncer, carseat...ect. I had to prop part of her bed up so she was at an angle. I also had to change her formula to low iron (they don't make that now) They never told me then what it was, and she grew out of it for a few years, but at 5 she started having problems again and she now has acid reflux (it also runs in her family) and has to take meds daily for it. if you formula feed, you may want to change to soy, I would try that. Our twins spit up a lot and we changed them to soy and they are doing much better now and haven't spit up much since the change. But you should always check with you doctor first! Good Luck!

My son (who is now 2) had a bad case of acid reflux as an infant. We switched formula several times, started with the standard Enfamil Lipil, then switched to the standard Similac Advance (ready to feed)...later tried Soy and that too didn't work. So, eventually we tried Lactose Free Similac, and that seemed to be best for him. He was still suffering from acid reflux though. He would constantly (pardon the expression) throw up in his mouth. Around 2 months, he began having major congestion and sounded extremely phlemy. After taking him to 2 allergy specialists, and 3 different pediatric ENT's...they ended up doing a scope through his nose. They did confirm that the acid reflux was causing the nose to produce extra mucus as a natural defense, which in turn, was causing major congestion. He was put on Zantac and that did wonders for him. He eventually outgrew the reflux and was ok w/o the meds (I think he was around 12 months). I think my son was an unusual case though. A bit of spitting up is totally normal with babies...unless you notice it constantly thoughout the day, even when sitting still. I now have a 6 month old and she spits up quite a bit but mostly when she's excited, handled too much, lays down immediately after eating or has just finished eating. I would mention it to your pediatrician...if it doesn't seem to be bothering the baby, then I wouldn't stress about it too much, I'm sure she'll grow out of it...I think it's 10x worse for us mothers to experience watching it than it really is for our babies (especially when it's your 1st child!) My daughter constantly spit up. I tried different formulas til I found one that worked best for her. Maybe your daughter has allergies and needs a soy based formula. Good luck in your search.

If your baby has reflux they will act like they are in pain when they spit up. My daughter had reflux and was treated for it in the NICU before she came home. (she was 11 weeks early and reflux is a common thing among preemies due to the under developed digestive system) Her peditrician doesn't really believe in baby reflux and discontinued saying that some babies were just spitters and that she was continuing to gain weight so she didn't need the medication.

While I knew that some babies were just spitters, this wasn't just spitting - she was in pain. She would cry, arch her back, stiffen out and act like she was truely in pain. Things that she didn't do while she was on the medication. We finally got her doctor to put her back on the medication (zantac and reglan) for a while. Within a few months, she had outgrown the need for the medication and was fine. She still spit a lot when she burped, but she wasn't in pain anymore.

If your daughter is just spitting, I would say from my experience, invest in some good burp cloths (Target has some really cute ones that are thick -diaper like- and are reasonable) and lots of bibs (Carters makes some that are not suppose to soak through and they do work well. They are a bit more pricy, but if you can get them on sale, or at the Carter store in Holland or Howell (there are others around at other outlet malls) they aren't too bad). If she is acting like she is in pain, talk to your peditrician about reflux.

We were told that our daughter has reflux. She would spit up a lot, arch her back, scream as if someone was killing her for hours on end, eat EVERY hour (like clock work), everytime she spit up, she would scream more.She was gaining weight with no problems, but just seemed to be overall uncomfortable. I nursed her for 8 months, before I had to switch her to a soy formula (the elimination diet did not work). IF I ate anything with any type of acid in it, she would get upset. She is now on Zantac twice a day, and Previcid once a day. We see a GREAT peds gastro Dr, (send me a message if you would like his name). She is doing better, and hopefully we can start to wean her off the meds soon. It is hard now, but it will get easier.
To judge how much she is spitting up - measure out a TSP, a TBSP, and an ounce of water onto a burb cloth in different areas. This will help you to judge how much is actually coming up. It may not be as much as you think, or it could be more.

My son had acid reful very bad. His first symptoms were when we were still in the hospital after his birth. He would have it come out his nose. Anyway, he was put on Zantac but that didn't help him. Then they put him on Prevacid and that helped some but he still needed an extra medcine called Reglan. Both these medications are very strong for a child. Thankfully he grew out of the reflux. Somethings that we did that helped were keeping him upright after he ate for at least an hour. I know this might seem like a pain in the butt it helps. We did add cereal to his bottle but be careful you don't add too much. We also bought a wedge to put in his crib so he slept on an incline, it goes btwn the sheet and the mattress. I tried to never let him be flat on his back. We did try to switch to the Infamil Gentlease formula that has cereal in it but he refused to eat it. Believe it or not when he drank water that would help him as well.

is she is pain? my step daughter has a 1 year just got told her baby has acid reflux it makes her spit up all the time while she was on formula, it took until she was over six months old for the doctor to figure it out.
ask your doctor becasue the baby could be causing her self some pain in her throat.

Hi E. H. I dont mean to frighten you but I was told that babies (little) shouldnt spit up a lot. I had my son on Similac and it made him spit up and gave him gas as soon as he started to drink it. I signed up for Enfamil and switched his milk and he was fine ever since. They also have a milk that is specially formulated for children who spit it a lot. They have a program called "New Beginnings" where they send you milk and coupons. The coupons are for like $5-$10 off the formula, which as you may know is kind of pricey. Wal-Mart has the cheapest formula and with the coupons that helped a lot. To answer your question, the pediatrician should be able to tell you ASAP.

I am a first time mom to a beautiful daughter that is now 4 months old who also has reflux. They diagnosed it at 2 months too. I believe every baby will have this until that muscle in their throat starts to strenghen. My daughter was spitting up alot and growning at the normal rate. When she spit up she would sometimes cry because it was burning her stomach like heartburn would for us adults. He put her on a liquid called Axid 15mg. It worked wonders and still does. It relieves their burning but of course does not get rid of the spit up because that is normal. But ask your doctor abou that medication and if he thinks your baby might be a candidate. My doc told me that the reflux will often times go away when you start a baby on cereal (which he said mine will start in the next few weeks) and go away anywhere between 4-9 months. especially when they start to sit up on their own because if you think about when they are able to do that they strengthen their muscle in their throat more when they are able to do that. Also what helps is after each feeding to sit your baby up in a chair or swing or bouncy seat for a half hour or so before putting them to sleep. See if that helps and let me know about anything else. My son spit up horribly in his first year or so. It bothered me more so than him. The doctors told me that as long as he wasn't bothered or upset by it, and he was gaining weight properly it was nothing to worry about. I remember at one of his well visits I was concerned that one of the kids at his daycare had the flu. I asked how I would know if he was spitting up or throwing up since he was on formula and we wouldn't notice a difference in the two. The doctor's response? "It's the difference between using a burp cloth or a beach towel to clean it up." To which I pointed out that if he looked at our past visits my concern was that I was using the proverbial "beach towel" to clean up his spit-up. He then changed his response to watch for a fever. Needless to say, when we go to the Dr we request to see anyone besides him. All the other Drs are great. Anyhow, pay attention to if it is upsetting her or causing her to not eat. If not, I wouldn't stress too much over it (easy to say, I know). In the meantime, as the other mom mentioned, you'll go through lots of laundry (yours & hers) and you may want to throw a sheet over your chair or where ever you feed her if it's fabric. I did. Take her to the pediatrican he/she is the best one to make this call and give you the best advise.

My son spit up an enormous amount also. ANd many babies do just spit up a ton. My son didn't lose weight or anything. But along with the spit up, around 3 month, he seemed to be so uncomfortable and in pain. It was hard to feed him. He would just cry and come off the breast. He'd arch his back. He was miserable. The doctor put him on zantac and while it didn't cure the excessive spit up, it did cure the acid and pain. He only took it for two month and seemed to be better. At nine months he stopped spitting up so much! If it's just a lot of spit up, it'll just take time. If it's acid reflux, you'll see other symptoms besides the spit up. Good luck. I know its rather frustrating to be cleaning up spit up all the time.

I was shocked when I found out that our baby had reflux. He wasn't even spitting up! We had an xray done and the xray showed that the breastmilk was coming up most of the way but just not out his mouth. He was also growing normally, so if you're concerned about it, ask your pediatrician and get an xray.

E., Have you talked to the doctor about changing her formula? Or are you breast feeding her? Some babies cannot digest cows milk. ( baby Cows can.) I read "Natural Cures" by Kevin Treadeau. It explains a lot about what we all should be eating and not be eating. Soy milk helped my niece who spit up a lot. I hope it helps you. Pam R.

I went through the same thing with my son. He was a HUGE spitter-upper--I must've changed both our clothes 10 times a day. It doesn't matter what I tried, he always spit up tons and tons. The doctor told me that my son did have reflux (that little flap that separates the esophagus from the stomach wouldn't stay closed.). However, my son did NOT have GERD...I can't remember exactly what that means, but I think it does involve acid. GERD, I believe, is where the babies are in actual pain and discomfort every time they spit up, and some babies might even lose weight (or at least not gain good weight.)

My doctor said Alex was what she would call a "happy spitter". This means that my son was not bothered by spitting up at all. He was not in any pain or discomfort. He would just spit up and then carry on like nothing happened. He also gained weight just fine, which surprised me because he seemed to spit up everything he ate. I breastfed him for 6 months, and he spit up the same whether he ate breast milk or formula. But since he was not in any pain, he never needed any sort of medication. I know babies with that painful GERD usually do get put on meds to help control their pain. My friend's little girl has GERD, and she said that while the medicine didn't stop the spitting up, it definitely put an end to the pain and discomfort that went along with it.

My son stopped spitting up around a year old--FOR THE MOST PART. He would still occasionally spit up every now and then, and that was usually if I gave him juice w/out having any food in his belly (although there were a few times I couldn't figure out why he spit up.) He is now 19 months and it has been over a month since he has spit up, so I'm hoping we are all done with that! My baby girl is due next month and I am really hoping she is not such a big spitter-upper!

Hi E.! I have a 4 month old daughter. It seems like I have taken her to the doctors at least once a month to ask them about her spitting up. They just keep telling me that she is gaining weight and doing fine. They told me that some babies just spit up alot. She is one of them. It seems like everytime I look at her she is spitting up. As far as I know about my daughter is that there is no problem, she just spits up alot. She will out grow it.

My daughter was diagnosed with silent acid reflux at about 2 and a half months old. She did not spit up very often she was swallowing it but when she did spit up it was bad. My daughter was gaining weight like she was supposed to, the major symptom was she was crying alot and we thought it was gas and changed her formula but it was the reflux. Dr. Brown's bottles helped a little but the doctor prescibed zantac which was wonderful she immediately turned into a very happy baby and was sleeping more. I did alot of research online because i did not even know about silent acid reflux but after hearing other moms talk about their babies symptoms I knew that was what my daughter had and my pediatrician agreed. My daughters reflux seemed to go away when she started eating solids

Our son had it when he was under 3 months old. We noticed that each time he spit up he would cry and be very uncomfortable. The spit up was any amount. We thought at first it was gas and was giving Gas-X, but soon it was not the soother. We talked to the pediatrician and he prescribed Zantac. We gave him that 2X a day and it worked. He only needed it for about 2 months and then we quit after the prescription ran out. He has seemed to have grown out of it. He occasionally spits up, but no more crying after.

Most infants have some form of reflux. The Doctors only get concerned about it, if they're in pain, or not gaining weight properly. Most kids also grow out of it by 7 months to a year.

My son has been on the meds for it since he was a month old, and he's 16 months now, but we've never had a problem with him acting as if his Zantac or Relgen was causing him pain as it was going down like one person below mentioned. He used to arch his back so drastically he was almost bent in half backward, and scream for 3-4 hours at a time, more or less all day. My doctor at the time thought that I was over exaggerating until I brought in a burp rag he'd literally soaked in spit up from the 15 minutes we'd been in the waiting room. You may also want to try gas drops, if her doctor says it's alright, it helped some for my son, before they determined in their minds it -was- in fact GERD.

Talk to your Ped. about it, they'll have more information and be able to ask you appropriate questions and/or do tests to find out if it's GERD. True GERD in infants (leading to acid reflux in childhood) isn't as common as you might think... and as long as she's not seeming to be in pain.. refusing bottles, drinking extra bottles because the formula calms the burn, arching her back during or just after feedings, or crying relentlessly, I think she's fine.

My daughter had reflux. aAlmost all babies spit up. they grow out of it in time. But my daughter would spit up much more than average. For example, if you layed her down flat on her back to change a diaper, she wouldhave milk coming out of her mouth even if it had been an hour since she ate. She would often spit up if she layed flat on her stomach. It was hard tolay her down to sleep cause she would spit up wake up and scream. She outgrew the reflux. I talked to the pediatrician about it and he told me to try keeping her upright after she eats and a few other things. He said they always treat kids that are not gaining weight due to reflux. She was gaining weight. When the simple solutions didnt work, we started her on zantac syrup. She took zantac from 2 monht until 7 or so months. She had spittin up problmes until she started eating solid foods. She is now 15 months and is fine.

So you can wait it out and your daughter will outgrow it.. or you can ask the dr. for medicine IF it is causing prooblems such as poor weight gain and problems sleeping-(and when baby has problems sleeping- mom has problems sleeping)

My baby is ten months now and she did the same thing. I too thought she had acid reflux or something else. My first daughter spit up, but not so much. turns out I asked the pediatrician and everything was fine. Some babies spit up more than others. By the time she was 7 month it all went away. Just watch her weight and mood. If she is happy, full of energy and growinng - then just pack up extra bibs. Hope this helps.
