My sister and I are currently researching what it takes to start a small business. We are interested in talking to anyone who might have experience in starting a small business. I will share more details when we talk to someone. We would just like to get some solid advice and ideas on how to start things. We want to talk to someone who has been successful and is willing to share ideas. Thank you!

I am actually working on some details for my own business. I will be going "live" in fall 2007. I can't share details now- due to patent- but it will be business that caters to women business only. I have read some great books and I have a lot of experience in this area. If I can help, let me know.

R., I started my own business (photography). I had tried to start one before and it flopped. :( Live and learn. There are good resources on the net. Even yet, there are good resources from other moms. It really depends on the business you are looking to start, what you know about it, and networking (I am learning the hard way). I would be happy to talk more. It is challenging and rewarding. I have a 19mo. at home. JUGGLE and lots of late nights for me.

Hi R.,

I started my own business 9 years ago now. I design and build Web sites and use SAHM as my work force. I have an 18 mos. old and a 4 1/2 year old.

I love the flexiability of working from home and some what choosing my hours. My company Web site is www.pcawebdesign.com if you would like to see where I am now.

I am going to be giving a presentation to a group of Mom's at my church this Summer on how to juggle kids and your own company, but I am not sure of the date yet. You would certainly be welcome to come. I think they are going to have 3 self-employeed Mom's talking to the group.

Feel free to e-mail you if you would like to talk more.

Have a great Mother's Day!

I have owned a small business here in the DFW area for about 2.5 years now. It has been very exciting as well as frustrating. Keep in mind that it typically takes 3-5 years to get a business off the ground and start seeing a profit. If you can wait a few years before you see a profit, a small business might be great for you!

Hi R.,

I have not started my own business, but am a career coach and work with several folks who have. A resource they use is SCORE, a division of the SBA. THese are a group of former executives and business owners who provide consulting services to individuals starting their own businesses. And its FREE!! There is an office in Dallas off of 75 and NW Hwy, but you can access them on their website, www.score.org.

Good luck!!

Hello R.! Congratulations! Starting a business takes guts! You recognize that you will never get rich working for someone else- good for you!

I launched two businesses last yr. (2005)- my own interior decorating firm and Southern Living at HOME consultant.

I highly recommend you check into a class for start up businesses called Project New at the Fort Worth Women's Business Assistance Center, ask for Toni Booth.

Let me know if I can help you in any other way.

Best Wishes,

R.,
Good Luck with your adventure. I started an In-home preschool about 1 1/2 years ago. We got our LLC filed through activefilings.com (it costs about $325). We had to register our name with the county (I think it was $11).
Collin County Community College offers a Small Business Course. It is held at the Courtyard campus in Plano. I got a lot of info. through those classes. It takes about 3 months to finish the series, and most of them are evening classes. They also have advisors at that campus, and it's FREE! They will help you with a business plan, or any questions that you might have. You can just call the Courtyard campus, and they will get you in-touch with the right people.
