So bummed...someone threw a wet wash rag in a hamper and the Only thing that got mildew on it was a soft cotton knit shorts jumper of Alex's that he has worn all of once. I tried treating it with the oxyclean spray n wash and washing it in cold water...still there, I scrubbed with a salt and lemon juice mixture...didn't budge...Any ideas would really be appreciated I hate the idea of throwing it out. Thanks = )

I know you said you did the lemon juice, but....I have used straight lemon juice on the spot & then put it outside in direct sunlight for about an hour. My mother in law told me to try it one time & I couldn't believe how well it worked. Hopefully it will work for you too! Of course you may have to wait for a few days until we see sunlight around here again! Good luck!

I agree with soaking in the oxyclean. (I have not tried using color-safe bleach and boiling it, but that sounds good, too.) I have had really good luck getting horrible stains by placing oxclean in a bowl of warm water and letting the article of clothing soak over night. I also did not notice any fading in the color of the clothing.

I would be very careful using something like Tilex because the main ingredient is actually bleach. Unless the article of clothing is white, you will ruin it by spraying the Tilex on it.

Good luck to you! J.

Use a mildew remover -- Tilex, CLR, etc. spray (yes, a spray that you would typically use in the bathtub). I had a whole load of clothes that were left in the washer for over a week 1x (went on vacation & had forgot about it). Anyway, it worked perfectly -- good luck.

RE:Mildew on Clothes
Hi, I put OxyClean and Colorsafe Bleach in water with my clothes then I boil it until the mildew comes out. I normally let the clothes remain in the pan over night with a lid on it, to keep the heat in as long as possible. I found this works like a charm on everything I have tried it on. Make sure your clothing can withstand boiling water, Oxyclean and Colorsafe Bleach before trying this idea.

Good Luck, I hope this helps!

Try hydrogen peroxide straight from the bottle, and let it sit for 30 min or longer, it works on clothes as well as in bathroom when you find that bleach isn't working so well anymore. Mold and mildew become immune to whatever you may be treating it with, just as virus and bacteria strains.

So this is why alternate between bleach mixed with water and hydrogen peroxide it keeps it from building immunity. Peroxide can lighten clothing like bleach does, just not as quickly, so be sure to test a small area first.

Soak in white vinegar for a period of time, rinse, then wash and dry.

I know I am late but have you tried soaking it in vinegar water? I don't know if it will work or not but its what I used on grandson clothes to bleach them out.
