I loved this one too until I heard the original (not the one above) as it pertained to slavery =(

This is a lovely Copland piece that I sang in concert several times. The rendition with piano sounds like horses galloping, so if you get a chance, get the recording of it with piano. Of course, the orchestral version is lovely too, but some how doesn't sound as much like horses.

We had it on a Kenny Loggins lullaby CD when my (now almost 17 year old) daughter was a baby and loved it. She wore that cassette tape (old , I know!) right out and we had to get 2 more copies (it played round and round all night long on the player we had).

His said "pretty little ponies" I think. I believe it was "Return to pooh corner" CD

but...when I saw that bit of lyrics, I could hear Mary of "Peter, Paul, and Mary" singing it..

So, yes, the song's origins are from slavery, but it's not about slavery, nor does it promote the idea of slavery. It has a lovely melody and makes a wonderful lullaby as well as nice memories for your child.

Here's how I learned it from my mom--slightly different than what is on Google, but a little sweeter I think. I sang it to my boys all the time. It's interesting that my version mentions "pintos"--maybe reflects my upbringing in the southwest.
