Akron General Vs. Akron City Hospital

Does anyone have any pros or cons for these 2 hospitals as far as delivering your baby? I had my first child at Akron City and wasn't very pleased with the overall experience...but it could have just been my situation. (I was there over Thanksgiving holiday, had an emergency C-section, and ended up having to stay much longer due to infection) Yesterday I toured Akron General and wasn't very impressed, but just don't know exactly what I'm looking for. I have to make a decision soon, and am just undecided on whether one is better than the other or if it makes no difference at all. Insurance covers either. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

my experience is with city. The delivery staff were WONDERFUL!! Couldn't have asked for better. However my issues there were with the post partum care staff. But since this isn't your first, you may have no issues. But overall a great experience and would not hesitate to deliver there again.

I delivered unexpectedly at Akron City because Akron General maternity ward was closed because they were full. I had absolutely wonderful care at City and could not have asked for better treatment. I had my own doula so I had constant care anyway but I was very impressed with the security measures in place to keep babies safe and with their proper parents. I never had a child at General but I've been walking by and seen doors to the nursery open and it just seems like anyone could walk in if they really wanted to. I have already decided to go to City again if we have another child just because of the security measures in place. Hope this helps!!!! Congratulations and good luck with your choice.

Hi S.!

I had my first 2 girls at City and actually had a wonderful experience, so when I was pregnant with our 3rd and found out that our insurance wasn't going to be accepted at City, I was very upset. Fortunately it all worked out, and we had a very good experience at General too. I did prefer City, and would choose them, but it all worked out.

Congratulations and good luck! Every mom should have their girl :)

I delivered my son at Akron General and had a wonderful experience!! Not the greatest situation (because my son wound up sick and had to be transferred to Children's) however, it was not at any fault of the hospital. I overall had an excellent delivery experience. My daughter was born at Akron City ONLY BECAUSE my husband's company changed insurance companies and I wasnt able to return to General, and I was very displeased with the treatment from the nursing staff, the overall experience at City was unpleasant. If I had to do it all over again, I would have insisted that I be delivered at General again. Just my personal experience?!?! Hope this helps.

Both hospitals are very good. I have only had experience with Akron General for emergency issues, and their communication and service and care could not have been better. Having said that, I have a high school friend Joyce North who is a nurse in the maternaty ward at Akron City. She is awesome. I also have another friend at Akron City that is an aid. She is also a fabulous, caring person. I had both of my sons in hospitals in the Chicago area so I can't speak from experience in the maternaty wards. Perhaps your first experience in Akron City was not the norm due to the holiday weekend and emergency issue. February is a better month to have a baby without major holidays! Go with your gut feeling because both hospitals are rated very high.

I delivered both my children at Akron General and both were "unplanned" c-sections. My daughter was scheduled but I didn't make it to the scheduled date. I only had one problem with one nurse (she was too lazy to take out the catheter and clean me up) and after I reported the problem I got the best care and they made sure I never saw that nurse again during my stay. I would definitely recommend Akron General to everyone.

I wasnt impressed with Akron City either but it has a better maternity ward. I was at Akron General up until my last couple of weeks and I was so mad my insuranced switch and I had to go to Akron City. My daughter had a prolapsed cord and when it came down to it Akron City knew what to do and they didnt hesitate. So I knew that there was a reason for my insurance switching!! If I ever have another child it will definitly be there. Everyone was nice and helped me get through everything.

Are you planning on a VBAC or a repeat c-section?

Both my son and my twin girls were born via c-section at Akron General. I can't say enough about the staff and the care that we were given for the births of our children. I would highly recommend this hospital. Good luck!

I delivered at City and LOVE IT!!! My obgyn told me to go to city. General tends to more busy and you have less of a chance to have a private room. I like that city is "LOCKED" down and very secure. General didn't seem to be as secure. I had a friend who had a scheduled csection at General, they called her 2 hours before she was to be there and told her to go to Barberton that they didn't have room for her. My next one will be delivered at City also.
