AHHH - Almost 4 Year Old Ate Mango Skin - Is This BAD?

Hi Moms, my son LOVES mangos. Daddy got a couple and they were on the counter ripening. My son has never tried to eat them before, but when I was in the living room, he got ahold of one and bit into it. I don't think he swallowed any skin - or a very small piece cause I found pieces about the size of the bite. BUT, I've read that you can have an allergic reaction if you have a poison Ivy or Sumac allergy (websites weren't clear as to which one). I've NEVER had a reaction to this stuff, and I don't remember if my husband has prior to our being together (he's never had one as long as we've been together). My son hasn't either. I don't KNOW if he has an allergy.

Do I have anything to worry about? Is there anything I can do to prevent a possible reaction? I do have children's benadryl on hand. The stuff I read says it takes a few hours for a reaction to show up...

Thanks for your help!

I found this online: "In the same plant family as poisonous sumac, the mango's peel contains substance called urushiol. Urushiol often results in itching of the skin, skin rashes called urushiol-stimulated contact dermatitis or even allergies of the skin.

Since he didn't ingest it, he'll probably be ok. But I'm sure you'll keep an eye on him.

You know i believe its the sap not the skin so much. Yes he can be allergic to mangoes or not but more likely it would be the sap. Just watch for his face turning red. or problems breathing What I've seen most is a skin reaction around the mouth. My daughter has eaten mangoes and mango skins her whole life no issues.

I am allergic to mangoes, which is a sad thing for me. I can eat processed mango but not fresh.

Probably should be okay this time around, but he may become sensitized so the next time he might develop an uncomfortable rash around his mouth. Not a huge deal, but just be on the lookout.

I've eaten the mango skin in the past (a lot of times ) and it never cause any allergy reaction at all. I wouldn't worry.

It is not going to do him anything. I know from experience! I have never heard of this allergic thing either.
