Advice on Personal DVD Player for Car Trips

Well, we're finally breaking down and looking for a portable DVD player to keep my son (3.5) happy during long car and plane trips. Does anyone have one to recommend? We don't need the most expensive. The main thing will be longevity of the battery. Any tips on that--should we buy two batteries? Also, does it strap to the back of the front seat in cars, or how does that work? Many thanks for your valuable feedback.

What can I do next?

Dear E.,

I believe Playschool has just come out with a portable DVD for little kids. It is really simple to use and extremely durable.

Whatever DVD player you get will need tp be somthing that can withstand being dropped since a little one is using it. We borrowed one from a friend and I am not sure what brand it was but it was thick hard plastic so the DVD's don't get damaged.

I would look at Target. I am pretty sure they have a selecttion of them.

We bought an inexpensive large(er) screen dvd player for the plane. We bought an extra battery. It snaps on externally. We don't use ours in the car but we did purchase this and we love it. Our daughter can eat, color, draw etc. I would guess a dvd player would sit on there quite nicely.

We bought the Phillips DVD player at Target. I don't know the model offhand but it is white and came with a battery, extra screen, AC adapter, car jack, and the seat mount. We love it! The battery stated that it lasted 2.5 hours. And we really never needed it more than that, although it has been played tons and definitely plays up to 2 hours (the battery never turned off on us yet). The mount works perfectly on our Toyota 4 runner, but not on our VW passat. So when we travel on the road the DVD player rests in-between the front seats and works fine. The sound and picture quality are great. It has been banged around a small bit with no problems.

We also have one with a cigarette lighter plug in for the car, but the batteries have lasted a 3 hour car trip, so I have never had to use the plug in. We then recharge the batteries overnight and they are good to go the next day! The one we have is relatively cheap. We have an RCA brand.

Don't worry about the battery -- look for a model that comes with a cigarette lighter power adapter, and make sure the cord is long enough to go from your cigarette lighter to the back seat where your child sits. You can get extension cords from Radio Shack, if necessary. We use it and it works like a charm!
