IS anyone's children on Mededate CD for ADHD??? My child is on it, 10mg and she complains all the time that her stomach hurts. It has helped tremendously with school work, grades, behavior, and getting along with others. But She freaks out in the morning to take it because it makes her tummy hurt all day. I called the dr about it and he said to make sure I fed her good first then give it to her. This doesn't work either. What would you do? I hate to see her hurt!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took my daughtr to the dr. He was happy with her performance and such on Metedate CD but he changed her to Focalin due to the stomach issues. HEr grades are still very good, as they always were before the medicine, but her behavior is not so good again. My daughter says her stomach does not hurt, but she feels hyper. HEr teacher told me yesterday she is very argumentive with her friends and is back to doing her work slow and unmotivated. so I am assuming Focalin is not the answer either. I am working on eleminating the red dye from her foods, but it looks like we will be trying another medicine soon and maybe another Dr. Thanks for your input!

If you're not happy with the side effects, there's no point in continuing. There are so many other medications out there for ADHD; don't put up with unacceptable side effects. We made the mistake of sticking it out with Adderall and Vyvanse (had to call 911 on this one, he was smashing holes in his wall and threatening to jump out his window) and those two were total nightmares for our son. A lot of the time, side effects don't improve over time (although things like appetite usually do).

Definitely talk to the doctor again and ask to try something else. if Metadate works well otherwise, there are a number of other medications in the same family, including Concerta and Focalin. Another one in the same family may prove to be a better match.

I'd try something different and see if that lessens the tummy aches. There are so many drugs out there to try that something has to work. My son takes focalin xr for his adhd and has had no side effect but when my other son tried taking it it made him very emotional so we had to try something else.

We switched to daytrana patch, its great slowly released and skips digestive and we have more control over it.

I can't take any Ritalin family drugs (which Metadate is), for the exact same reason. They make me horrifically nauseous. If I actually have the gall to get excited about something I throw up. If I'm merely happy about something I feel like someone has punched me in the gut. Nasty, vile, terrible stuff.

This side effect doesn't happen for everyone, because we all react to meds differently.

Switch meds. Imagine being morning sick 24/7. Switch to a different family, pronto.

Ask about vyvanse.. I was on metadate for a few years and yeah, it does mess with your stomach a little, I wouldn't say it "hurt", more like unease all day... but to a kid that sorta is "hurt". Vyvanse is WAY more mild and just as effective (more so for me because I'm not wasting my time thinking "my stomach feels gross!") same exact results as far as productivity and practically no bad side effects. She will still loose her appetite at first but that's with any of those meds.. if he insists on sticking with metadate find a new doc, he'll be doing that to keep getting rewarded for writing the rx :) vyvanse is the way to go!

Metedate is just another stimulant ADHD medication. Talk to your doctor and ask to change to something else. There are plenty out there to try and no need to make her put up with side effects like that.

Adderal XR has excellent reviews. As does Vyvanse and Concerta.
