My 2nd dad had throat cancer, the cancer is gone but due to complications on that kind of surgery he couldn't swallow and lost ALOT of weight and was hospitalized with pneumonia from the food going down the wrong pipe. He eventually had to have a feeding tube (he gets it out this week!!Praise God!)He found Ensure and it wasn't tasty but he needed to not lose any more weight. He also found something made by Carnation that was tastier. A nutritionist is a must it sounds like, my dads helped him start slow and figured out what he had problems with. The feeding tube is also something his doctor should consider especially if its a significant amount of weight. I would get a second opinion too about the tube.
Well wishes for you and yours.

I think the best thing you could do would be to get a nutritionist to TALK to the doctor and come to some agreement about what he should eat. Good luck to you.

If he likes milk shakes, he might like Ensure or Boost. They are lactose free, and have alot of nutritional value. I'm actually surprised that your nutritionist didn't mention it b/c it is often used for patients who have things like cancer. It really helps keep the weight on. I actually was on Ensure during my pregnancy because I lost so much weight and needed protein. I had an allergic reaction to Boost though. I don't know what the difference was. But you can get them in the pharmacy or natural foods sections of the grocery for about $7 for a 6-pack. Oh, and if you buy them from Kroger, the coupon machine at Kroger will start printing out coupons for you.

Ensure is great for weight gain! Highly recommend. If you go to ensure.com there are a ton of different things to do with them also. You can buy them at wal-mart, k-mart, etc. Hope this helps

I will first of all pray for you both. I was thinking that maybe if he gets a protien shake you can find all kinds at health food stores but GNC is great too. They have one called weight gainer it is packed with all kinds of good stuff and it doesn't taste bad either I am just not sure about what your suppose to mix it with. If it calls for milk try the lactaid or a non-dairy milk sub. Good luck

I would deffinatly have the two talk. another idea is have you tried the dairy free nutrition drinks? like ensure, I know they have to have non dairy forms of those. They come with extra protein which helps gain weight. and maybe not eat/ drink it all at once. hth , my prayers.
