A Silly Question About Snoring

My almost 10-month-old son snores occasionally. My husband expressed concern about this last night. He's heard that snoring in infants is associated with sleep apnea, SIDS, and other breathing problems. I've never heard of any medical issues with babies snoring, but told him I'd look into it. As usual, the baby sites I use gave no help. Has anyone heard of medical issues with infants snoring?

What can I do next?

I would have him checked by the doctor. My son had his adenoids removed when he was 19 months old due to 99% blockage which caused him to snore. It worked wonders!!! It is a simple proceedure that only takes about 15 minutes. Good luck.

Hi A.,
This is not a silly question. My twins both snored at night and come to find out it was plain old allergies. Have your son tested for allergies (even if he doesn't sneeze or appear to have any other problems). It sure worked for my girls.

Hi A.,

Just affirming what most have already said. I was concerned about my daughter snoring and we took her in. Her tonsils and adenoids were so huge even though she wasn't sick. It was what was causing her snoring. SIDS and sleep apnea is the first thing my pediatrician brought up and we had them immediately removed. Quiet nights ever since! Please don't be passive on this. Even without the sids risk, you will be doing your child a huge favor by giving him good sleep for the rest of his life.

Good Luck,
Beth

Kudos to your husband for being involved and knowing some important, but often overlooked, information. He's right about the association with snoring and sleep apnea/breathing issues. There is a great resource that touches on this,as well as disturbed sleep and its negative impact on people-esp. children, and it is called "Healthy sleep habits, Happy child" bt Dr. Marc Weissbluth, pediatrician. Take a look ang good luck!

Hi A.!
Our son Jack used to snore as well and our pediatrician sent us to an ear nose and throat doctor. He suggested we have his tonsils and adnoids removed. He explained that that would help him sleep more soundly as well. We did it and he hasn't snored since and he did sleep much more soundly through the night. Hope that helps.

My son snores off an on all the time, they both do, one is 7, the other 20mo. They are both fine and healthy. If your husband is worried about it, talk to your son's Dr. It could be nothing (like in my son's cases), or it could be somthing. Best to be on safe side.... Could be just a case of he needs to have his head elevated at night to help with drainage? Good Luck

The concern would sound normal, because a lot of people that are snorers, do have sleep apnea later on in life. SIDS is a desease of the lungs. I saw a documentary on TV from the Netherlands. They had the highest SIDS death rate in the world. they said that the bacteria from the mattress, (urine, etc.), sets up in their lungs in 3 days and they are gone. They use a plastic pillow case type cover over the mattress. Since doing this, not one child that used this has died in 10 years. I asked about it to a local SIDS group. They never heard of it, and said there is no cure. I asked them to look into it, what have they to lose? They said they were not interested in it, and there are people working on it all the time. One of my grand sons snores he is 5 now and healthy. good luck.

Ask your doctor or a referal to an ENT. My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out at almost 19 months old because of snoring, breathing issues. When she saw the ENT at almost 18 months, her adenoids were enlarged and it wasn't until she was operated on, that she said the tonsils were enlarged as well. She definitely started snoring when she was a lot younger than 18 months.
