8 Yr Old Frequent Bathroom Trips

Hi. My daughter has been going to the bathroom more frequently in the last month. For example, she will have gotten ready for bed, then 10 mins. after lights out, needs to go again. I know what you are thinking, but this also happens at school, and seems to even be happening during parts of school that she enjoys. She can sometimes be distracted for a while, but even if we are out going to stores, at home in the afternoon, etc the pattern is often the same. We had urine test and culture done at dr., which came out negative. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

As another poster mentioned a tilted uterus I also have this and will go quite often. My other thought is diabetes and you need to have a blood sugar test done.

Hi Vicki,

I have the same problem. I have MANY food intolerances/allergies. I'm guessing my problem is due to a possibly inflamed bladder. I think there is a blood test for bodily inflammations.

I believe anxiety is a symptom of a taxed immune system. I believe the Flight-Fight-Freeze Response (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight-or-flight_response) is continually engaged causing a chronic state which has anxiety as an outward behavior. If you look at the symptoms of the response at Wikipedia, relaxation of the bladder is one. For me, my immune system is taxed by food allergens. It may be for your daughter also.

Good luck in finding an answer,
: ) Maureen

My friend has a tilted uterus which caused pressure on her bladder. She always feels like she has to pee and went through every test in the book, but there is nothing they can do about it except remove the uterus, but she wants kids so that is out of the question. Hopefully you will find a better and easier problem to deal with. Perhaps it is anxiety or perhaps she isn't drinking enough water.

Hi V., my nine year old daughter also has this problem. Her bathroom trips are driven by anxiety. Could your daughter be anxious about something? Good Luck.

I have this issue, and for me it is caused by anxiety. If I am anxious, I need to pee. If I think to myself "Do I need to pee?" just thinking that will cause me to feel like I need to pee. I hate to say it this way, but it really is all in my head. If im distracted or busy during the day, I will go hours without needing to go, but if im laying in bed trying to fall asleep, I will go every 10 minutes just to make sure that when I actually fall asleep my bladder is completely empty.
So, if you rule out health problems and she still needs to pee often, anxiety might explain it. As far as remedying the problem... sorry, but I don't even know what to do about it for myself!

Did they check for diabetes? Frequent urination, constantly being thirsty, and unexplained weight loss are 3 of the most common symptoms.

One odd thought - strep can cause this also. The only reason I know is that it happened to my son. The urine test comes out negative but the throat swab will show strep. The round of antibiotics cleared it up. Have your doctor check this.

You should test for vaginal strep. This can cause the frequent urge to urinate. Also - my daughter has had multiple battles with this - and a few times the original urine culture came back negative - but after pushing and pushing to have it done again - 3 weeks later it would come back positive. I don't know why - but this has happened repeatedly with my daughter. But she's also had the vaginal strep thing cause it too. So talk to the doctor AND to her to try to nail it down. The 10 minutes after going to bed sounds more like an infection of some type - my daughter's pedi urologist said that lying down puts a different kind of pressure on the bladder, so that while you might be able to tolerate and ignore the urge when you are standing, once you lie down you have a whole different pressure and urge that just can't be ignored. If this is happening when it is parts of things she ENJOYS at school - I would highly doubt the anxiety thing (and I have that issue with my daughters too) - but talk to her to find out. The way you describe it to me, however, I would pursue other avenues - doesn't sound like anxiety to me.

Diabetes can cause frequent urination. Poosibly other blood sugar imbalances.

Go on wrongdiagnosis.com and type in her symptoms. Should give you a list of all the possibilities.

Ps...one thing I just thought about- ezxcessive milk consumption can cause frequent urination/bedwetting. I think it might be because the body gets 8 times as much calcium to magnesium ratio. Hi calcium ratio to Magnesium can cause low calcium AND low magnesium.

Okay I am going to put this out there solely based upon my recent experiences. My 3yo daughter was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) in September. One of her roommates during our stay at the hopsital was a 7 year old girl who always had to pee, her mom said they did the testing for diabetes and it came back negative. She told me that one morning she felt a solid mass in her daughter's abdomen and they had it checked. Unfortunately it was a cancerous tumor that was pressing on her bladder, but at least she found it and they caught it in time. I don't want to sound like a gloom and doomer but after what I went through with my daughter's issues before finally getting the diagnosis of leukemia and this mom's story of what they went through, I tell everyone now that you can never be too cautious when it comes to your child's health. I would ask her doctor to examine her and possibly do some blood work just to be safe. At least then you can rule it out if it comes up negative.

Good luck!

i would ask for a blood sugar check for diabetes...frequent urination and unusual thirst can be signs of diabetes.

Hmm. First thoughts - bladder infection; pinched nerve in the lumbar region; kindey infection; weakend bladder muscles.

Just some thoughts.
