8 Weeks Pregnant Until I Had Ultrasound

Ok, this is kindof complicated...my last period was Jan 7 2010. I went to my midwife at 6 weeks had bloodwork done. Everything was fine, normal bloodwork. I went for exam at 8 weeks. Again everything seemed "normal" for 8 weeks until the US. My uterus is tilted so it was hard to see sack and could not see heartbeat. She sent me for Transverse US. There is a heartbeat, everything looks "normal" for a 6 week pg, not 8 weeks. The radiologist told me that in the first trimester the measurements are 99.9% accurate. That it's possible the egg was not fertilized right away. But i am 12 days off according to the US calculations. I asked if the baby could be underdeveloping and he said it is a possability, but most likely I am wrong about the date. I got a positive pg test on Feb 12. I know I am right on with my dates. I write down everything on a calendar and have for years! This is my 3rd baby. I am not new at this. I go for another US in a week and was told that if it measures 7 weeks than I was just wrong about the dates. I KNOW MY DATES ARE NOT WRONG!!!! Anyway I was just wondering if anyone has been thru something similar? I am 37 so I was thinking about doing a CVS, now I def will! Has anyone been through that? This is going to be a looong week! Thanks in advance for any advice and support!

Same thing happened to me with both my boys. I always measured small at the beginning so they changed the date and then I showed "big" later on. Both my boys are healthy and happy and born on the bigger side. (8 lbs 11 oz and 8 lobs 1 oz) I argued the whole time that they had the dates wrong but got nowhere.

Even though your cycle is regular, you don't always ovulate exactly in the middle of the cycle. You may have ovulated past day 14, although 12 days is a lot to be off by so who knows what the cause is. I wouldn't worry too much about the dates as long as your blood work is ok and the baby's heartbeat is strong.

I had a cvs with my last baby and everything was fine. It is a little more uncomfortable than an amnio, but it wasn't painful. I read that studies showed that the risk involved with cvs is no higher than with an amnio as long as it is performed by a doctor who does more than 200 a year. My doctor confirmed that. It was so nice to be able to get the results so early in the pregnancy with the cvs. The wait for an Amnio was just torture for me with my first pregnancy. (I had both of my kids in my 40s).
I will keep you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers. All the best!

Hi M.,

I can imagine how stressed you may be right now. Hang in there.

I went through sort of a similar situation where during my 1st visit my doctor said based on the dates/ my periods, my baby should have been 8 weeks old, however the ultrasound barely picked up a heart beat. The truth was that the fetus was barely 5 weeks old at that point and that was the reason for the faint heartbeat.

I waited 2 - 3 weeks and got an internal ultrasound done for the gestational age and viability and that day the baby was determined to be 8 weeks old and had a strong heartbeat. Everything was fine.

Please don't worry too much about the dates. If the heartbeat is strong and your next ultrasound goes well, I trust everything will work out. I know age may be a concern, but look at all those celebrities popping babies out post 40! I'm rooting for you and your little one!

I have read that you can ovulate at different times in your cycle, and sometimes even twice in one cycle. Therefore even if you know when your period was, you may not know when fertilization actually happened.
With my second baby I was sure of my dates, but all along on US they said she was smaller and they recalculated my due date. She was born one day before the date based on the US so that seems to have been right. Also, with that pregnancy my first home tests were negative and I didn't get a positive result until my period was about 10 days late, whereas with my first baby I got a positive result even before my period was due. Both of those things make me think I actually conceived much later in my cycle than I had thought I did. The same may be true of you.

I didn't have exactly the same experience, but I know my dates as well, and my baby's due date (found via ultrasound) is 1 week later than it should be according to my last menstrual period. There's nothing wrong with the baby -- it's growing perfectly! I have longish cycles in general, but the egg isn't always released mid-cycle, it can vary from month to month, so I didn't ovulate on the 14th day of my cycle (if you date by last menstrual period it assumes that you have a 28-day cycle AND that you ovulated mid-cycle, both of which are not true of many people). I ovulated the 20th day of my cycle -- I only know this because I was tracking my basal body temperature every morning -- so the baby should be almost a week younger/smaller than my due date according to my last period.

You probably know all that, but I just wanted to let you know my experience.

While ultrasound weight measurements toward the end are often inaccurate, the dating ultrasounds are usually very good. I also would think long and hard about doing the CVS ... there are definite risks involved, and it tells you less than an amnio. If it were me, I would wait to see how things go and get the amnio later if indicated. Of course, you need to do what you feel is best!

Good luck!

just b/c the dates of your period are accurate, that's just a generalization for dating the pregnancy. it is quite possible that you ovulated late in your cycle that month and are indeed at 6 weeks, rather than 8. i hope that is the case for you. i would really think hard about the CVS, the risks involved, and how you will feel if you are one of the unlucky ones that has pregnancy ending complications from it. i will be thinking of you, hoping that all goes well in your pregnancy, and that this is just some minor bump in the road!

I went through the exact situation and I was also 37 when we conceived. I knew my dates were correct (I also write everything down and track my mucus as well) in terms of when my husband and I were together and when I ovulated. The dates the doctors gave me were just under two weeks off of my original ovulation date. However, when I looked back at my charts and noted what I wrote down, what the doctors said made sense. I think I ovulated twice that month...the type of mucus I had proved it, but I assumed I was safe because I already ovulated two weeks prior!

Don't you know, I conceived 6 days before my period! I just ovulated for about 1 day at the end of the month and thought it wasn't possible. To this day, I think this: I was 37 and the body can start to do some weird things every now-and-again. I guess it was just one of those times!

Our baby was never underdeveloped in utereo or at birth. She is our 4th baby and she was the smallest (by 5 oz). She still is! She is 14 months old and about 20 lbs, where my other kids were 18 pounds at 6 months! But she is doing great developmentally, socially, and physically. She is extremely observant and bright. She is just tiny. So we lovingly call her our "Peanut."

So don't stress out! A relaxed mommy is better for a developing baby than a stressed mommy. Enjoy the ride!

Dear Michelle, I do not know of all the tests you speak of as I am an older mom. Life was so simple then... you find you are pregnant and you see your OB/GYN, eat right and take it easy. Try not to stress out:-/ Relax..all this stress affects your baby. When I carried my third child she was born 3 weeks after the due date. I was told I must have conceived later than the usual fertile time. Yes waiting 3 weeks was not great but she is fine and now a mom herself. My best, Grandma Mary

Dear Michelle,
I had the same exact string of events happen to me. My dates were perfect; and I knew within 3 days when fertilization had occured. At first they couldn't find babies heart beat. After that crisis, then, just like you baby measured wrong for dates. This was my fourth child, and carefully planned. I delivered a perfectly healthy normal 7 lb. baby girl; this despite the fact that the US late in pregnancy had shown cardiac defects, and I was urged to abort, which I refused. Technology can only go so far.
It is not perfect. Just go on loving your baby.

US tests are notoriously inaccurate in measurements. I had one before my dd was born and they said she was over 10 lbs. She was barely 7 at birth.

I've had that happen to me before but only one week off. I never thought anything of it except they do amniocentesis with all my kids and with this pregnancy her lungs were developed at 36 weeks where my others weren't ready until 37 or 38 weeks. That made me wonder if I were really 37 weeks with her and they were wrong about my date. I pray for a healthy, happy baby. Good luck!
