6 Mos Old Wetting Through Diaper at Night

Hi there!
My sweet 6 month old baby has been soaking through his diapers at night- every night without fail! I've tried the huggies overnights with a "maxi pad liner" in it...that didn't even work. Do any of you moms out there have any suggestions or ideas on how to keep him dry! He hasn't been able to sleep through the night yet b/c he always wakes up crying 4-5 hours into the night because he's uncomfortable and wet... I'm sooo exhausted and I know he'd sleep all night if I can just keep him dry. Thanks so much- I'll try anything at this point! :)

What can I do next?

I went through the same thing with my now 7 mo old if I used any other diaper then luvs. A size larger may be helpful too. Good luck.

Just to confirm what everyone else is saying: move up one size and stick to the overnight diapers. :)

Use the next size up and just make sure they are tight enough. That always solves it for us. We use Luv's - they never leak!

We had the same issue with one of our little guys. We used Pampers cruisers (tried the baby dry, but they exploded their little pellets everywhere), and went with one size larger just for overnight. It wasn't at six months, but by the time he was one year old we had already cut back on his fluids in the evening. He was very thirsty when he woke up, but it didn't seem to disturb his sleep. Good luck~

Hemp diaper doublers inside the diaper might work, along with a wool cover like Aristocrats soakers. I use cloth diapers, but it seems like they would work with disposables as well. My baby (also 6 mos.) is a heavy wetter and these have worked really well for me. Some of the doublers are thin enough that you could put two inside without too much bulk. Hemp and wool are really good at pulling the moisture away from the skin, and might actually help with diaper rash if that's a problem. The doublers are easy to wash, and wool covers don't have to be washed very often. I got mine from greenmountaindiapers.com

I do remember those times, and it did get to the point where nothing really helped...we used pampers, but switched to the huggies overnights and those seemed to work for us. I think you may just have to suck it up and change him halfway through the night. Sounds like he is just wet and doesn't want to be wet! I know you need your sleep, but he probably just feels really yucky and needs your help to help him be dry again!!

Hi, M.,
All babies are built differently and just like us, some undies fit and feel better than others. The only diapers that worked for my little ones were Pampers. I never had any leaks or problems with those like I did with other brands. Also, of course, feed your baby when he's hungry especially at bedtime, but as he gets older try not to become one of those moms whose child constantly has a sippy cup, juice box and some food item in their hand as though any moment we might experience a drought or famine. That's just one of my pet peeves. No one needs that much fluid or food. It also contributes to overeating and obesity. Best of luck! Love, K.

You could try those old-fashioined "rubber pants" over his diaper and pad. They have terry cloth inside and plastic on the outside.

Try using the next size up in the huggies & stop all fluids at least an hour before bed.

Also, you can try a stay dry liner in the diaper. They sell them on cloth diapering websites. You have various options. There are thin fleece ones which just keep the baby feeling dry w/o absorbing extra moisture & there are thicker ones w/hemp (or cotton, but hemp absorbs more) which absorbs extra moisture & has a feel dry side. You can wash & dry these in your washer & dryer. (I would still use the overnight disposable diapers w/these).

Finally, if he goes to bed before you do, you can change his diaper just before you go to bed.

Good luck

Hello M.,
I used White Cloud on both my boys and they are great and not as much as Huggies and Pampers. Good Luck!

Maybe you could try going to the next size up. I had to do that for awhile with my daughter. At the time, she was wearing 4's during the day and a 5 at night. I kept her in the smaller size as long as I could, because, quite honestly, you get less diapers in a pack the bigger you go. Good luck!

Make sure his winky is pointing down in his diaper. They sell things called diaper doublers that might work.
