I am so lost right now, I knew that my son was behind in class but I had no idea till I took him to Huntington. He has had multiple teachers this year and I am wondering if that is why. He went to VPK in daycare. HIs friend from daycare is already reading while my son cant recognize the alphabet letters on the fridge! I am so sad for him I dont know how or where to get him caught up ;(

What can I do next?

My daughter doesn't start kindergarten until August but she's the same age and they just brought the same issue to my attention today. You're on the right track putting him in Huntington - I've heard good things about that place. My daughter's delay stems from hearing loss between the ages of 1-2. She's in pre-k at a regular school and gets speech & language therapy to help her catch up. She'll continue to get it when she starts kindergarten but they will start to taper it off to mainstream her into regular classes. My suggestion is to be patient - every child develops at their own level. I went thru the same things with my daughter and got a little loud with some people because they made my daughter out to be an idiot. The mulitple teachers might play a small factor because every teacher has their own style and one might not work with kids as well as the other (crazy but true in this day and age). Try not to stress too much because kids pick up on that. See where the Huntington thing goes and see if they can give you some suggestions. But hang in there - you're definitely doing the right thing.

The change in teachers can definitely be a factor. My friend's son had 3 different teachers in kindergarten and she said that year was a total waste. He's in my son's 1st grade class this year at a different school and he is on the Principal's honor roll. She moved him under the choice plan because the other school was not very supportive and would not provide the help her son needed to keep up with other kids his age.

By brother got held back in kindergaten...and a few other grades, turned out he has adhd. You may want to get your child examined for adhd, dislexia, or other learning disabilities. One of my friends was not diagnosed with dixlexia until college! He struggled through school his whole life because he was never diagnosed and went for treatment, but believe it or not...he learned how to deal w/it and got his degree. Also, if you don't already, you may want to spend more one on one time teaching him the alphabet and how to read. Phonics is a great program to try. Unfortunately, you can't rely on teachers to teach your child how to read and write, and you know your child capabilities better than his teacher. Good Luck.

I highly recommend the Leap Frog videos. The letter Factory captivates the child and they are learning at the same time. This series helped both of my boys with letter recognition and sounds.

Tutoring at Huntington, or Kumon, or even the library should help, and I am sure they have recommended a screening for learning disabilities (like dyslexia) these can be caught so much earlier these days...they will teach your son to overcome them with basic stratagies.
He is lucky to have a caring mom like you. Don't be too h*** o* yourself, kids are good at hiding these things for fear of being "different". Best of Luck, I hope some of this helps!!
