My 3 year old daughter was just diagnosed with Vesicoureteral Reflux. It is the backward flow of urine from the bladder to the kidneys. She has had numerous UTI's and is constantly on antibiotics. Does anyone have experience with this problem? I feel so bad for her and would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks so much.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of the great advice and suggestions. After visiting the Dr. today, she is going to be on low dose antibiotics for the next year and when she is closer to age 5 they will retest her to see if she has outgrown the problem. The ultrasound showed that her kidneys are fine...we caught this before any scarring occured. Thanks again for all of your help!

My daughter was diagnosed with this condition when she was 4. I was devistated at what she would have to go through just for the diagnosis. It seemed so invasive. The constant use of antibiotics also scared me. I tried to talk her doctor into just monitoring her condition and trying to prevent UTI's through nutrition and avoiding baths, etc. He was persistent about following the traditional treatment of antibiotics. Now that she is a healthy 14 year old with no lasting effects of the reflux, I am so thankful that I trusted my pediatritian and allowed him to diagnose and treat her in the traditional manner. Looking back, I am just grateful that what she had was treatable and that her body outgrew it. She has rarely needed antibiotics since, (occasional strep throat) but we have no issues with resistance to antibiotics and her immune system is stronger than most kids. Good luck, and I hope my story gives you some confidence in what you're doing for her!

Hi there K.,
My daughter was diagnosed with that same thing after much pressure from me to the doctor to check her blood, he kept sending me home with a sick baby! She was about 8-10 months old. I felt so bad for her as well, the best thing you can do for her is keep her on the antibiotic so that she doesn't get scarring on her kidneys. After a year of medication they re-checked my daughter and thankfully she grew out of it. If she hadn't grown out of it we would be looking at surgery. My concern is this though...she is very sensitive down there and as she gets older her chances for yeast infections, bladder infections, and UTI's are going to be likely. Of course all women suffer from a little discomfort down there but hers is more likely. The best comfort you can give her is no bubble baths, (soap may irritate) and gentle detergent on under garments. Watch for fevers, and do a follow up in about 6 months after medication. I'm sorry for you and your daughter to have to go through this!! I hope it gets better soon!

My son was having UTI's and I took him to a Chinese Doctor who could see in 30 seconds that he had heat in this region, he gave me some herbs and it shifted after two doses, no kidding. Since then they decreased and we havent had an episode in over a year. My son is four. The Doctor has a website you could find him in Santa Fe New Mexico Dr. Zhao. He does super cheap consults for children and makes his own herbal liquid formulas that are awesome.

My daughter who is now a grown woman in her twenties, had this
problem; she was 4 when it progressively worsened. I finally
asked the physician what could be done; my position was that
this has to be causing damage since she would "swell" all
over her body and was literally living on antibiotics and
tylenol for the elevated temp. We got a referral to Children's Hospital in Houston. They did testing and then
surgery. Your physician should be checking this out, because
by the time we were referred to the surgeon, one of her
kidneys had been damaged so badly that it was NOT FUNCTIONING...thus the swelling and elevated temp. So my
advice is get her to a specialist...reflux is not good, but
it can be repaired. My daughter's kidney on the other side
was not damaged so she is fine with one functioning kidney
and a tiny part of the other kidney (they had to remove the
'bad' part of that kidney). Good luck. Your daughter will
be fine if you get this taken care of.

I had this as a child and eventually had bilateral ureteral reimplant surgery to repair it. It wasn't a hard surgery to recover from, even 20 years ago (and I'm sure they've improved things since then) and I've been fine ever since. Good luck!

I don't know where else to post this, but I only sent a flower back to the person who sent me one on this web site and it asked for my email to send the flower back to her. I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE EMAILS FROM THIS WEBSITE. I did not ask to receive emails. If it snares people in like that without their permission, I want nothing to do with it.
Thank you

My daughter was diagnosed with this issue at 5 months (she is now nearly 2 1/2). She has been seen by Dr. Stanley Galansky and he is a leading pediatric urologist...and very good. He has several offices and has had her on a daily low dose antibiotic (and she has not had a UTI since). We were sent to Children's Hospital for a test that determines what level (1-5 - 5 being the worst) of reflux she has. Children's was great, however, we were also sent to SkyRdige for the same test and I would NOT recommend them. BTW, I also have a 5 month old son and they recommended he be tested as well as it can run in siblings. Hope this helps!

I am sorry your daughter doesn't feel well. My sisters daughter had the same problem for years until they finally diagnosed her. She had tons of UTI's.....it was horrible. She finally had surgery to fix the problem and has totally fine ever since. Did the doctoir suggest that to you or is she too young?

Has your daughter had a sonogram to see her kidneys? The reason that I ask is because my newborn daughter (she is 5 weeks) was diagnosed with multicystic displastic kidney while I was pregnant with her. Basically what this means is that she has only one healthy kidney (the other one is filled with cysts). She is perfectly healthy, but she is in danger if she develops UTI's and because of her kidney situation she is more prone to UTI's. Aparently this disorder is really common and people can live their entire lives with it and not know they have it. I just wanted to share with you my situation as something to be aware of.
