3 Year Old Not Having Regular Bms

How long before I should be worried about my 3 year old not having a bm. He is pretty regular, but he just went 5 days before he had a bm today (after a pedia-lax suppository). He is finishing up a course of Amoxicillin this week. Could that have something to do with it?

What can I do next?

the antibiotics could have an effect for sure...
get some yakult or other yogurt or probiotic supplement for him.
also, make sure he's drinking lots of water..
and give him some prunes as a treat...
oatmeal for breakfast...
and maybe ask his doc about a stool SOFTENER till the flora in his guts have re-fleurished... =D
It'll save him from traumatic painful poops.

Good luck =D

If he took meds it could definantly have him off course. Make sure to give him some yogurt like yobaby by stonybrook farms or activia which have probiotics in it for the digestive tract. Good luck

Our Dr always warns that amoxicillin can cause diarrhea, so I don't think it would be causing constipation. 5 days is definitely too long, so it's good he had bm today. Personally I wouldn't be worried since he did go, but you may want to call your pedi to see if they think he needs to be seen. Is there anything else going on that may be stressing him out? A lot of times kids who feel out of control will hold their bms because it's something they can control. If this is a one time deal, I wouldn't worry. If it's a pattern, I'd focus on upping his fiber and water intake.

My kiddo's doc recommended Cracklin Oat Bran. She munches on it like cookies (what she calls them), not eats it like cereal.

Hi, Loribeth:

BM's need to be everyday.

No, antibiotics cause the reverse: diarrhea

Go to your local health food store and obtain some
friendly bacteria or probiotics for toddlers and
Hyland's vit. c 5 mg tabs and give to your child daily.
Just a suggestion.
Good luck.
