3 Year Old - HATES Haricuts and the Clipper Especially

Hi Moms,

Had another issue that I wanted your ideas with...
My son hates getting haircuts. He starts running when he sees scissors or the clipper is turned on. I tried the kid oriented salons. The videos, car like chairs don't make a difference at all. Currently he screams and turns red in face while we cut his hair. I tried doing it at home with no difference in reaction.

He is speech delayed so telling him stories/distracting him don't work well. Just taking a chance that you may have other ideas... Mamas?

What can I do next?

If you haven't tried this already, this might be something to consider. Before starting the haircut, I let your son hold the clippers, check them out, listen to the sound it makes, etc. This seemed to make it a little less scary for him. Of course this only works for the clipper part of the haircut, not the scissors!!!

Hope that helps.

Both my kids HATED the haircut places. I finally just bought my own clippers (they are like $20 at Walmart). Now I sit them down on a sheet in front of the TV so they can watch their favorite video and it help a LOT. It is way cheaper to do!!

My 3 year old went through this for a while until my dad was going to get his haircut one day! Granted he lives in a small town and knows the guy that cuts his hair pretty well and there is rarely a wait because it is a very small shop. Anyway, my son went and got to sit in the "big" chair and get his hair cut like Pawdad! Now, he won't let me take him only his Pawdad or in emergency situations when he can't take him then he will go with his dad which he also liked because "Daddy's hair lady" washed his hair in a sink! I hope this might help you some!

If you bought some clippers for the house, maybe turn them on for a little while every day. Or let him play with them??? Good Luck

My daughter was the same way at first but my sis in law cuts her hair. She works at a salon thats closed on Sun & Mond but she takes clinets those days....I bring her then so she doesnt embarass me too much(were the only ones there). She has a special cape and little booster seat for them and lets them play around w/ things and lets them pick out the color comb she uses on them....its not a kid salon just a general one but she is very good and fast w/ kids....you may want to give her a try her name is Natalie at Hair Flair on Blue Mound Rd # ###-###-####. Good Luck!
