3 Month Old Won't Go to Sleep Before Midnight

My 3 month old sleeps anywhere from 7-10 hours at night. Sounds great but the problem is, I can't seem to get him to sleep before midnight most nights. I did it the other night and got him to bed by 9:30 and he woke at 7:30am, but my excitement was distinguished when I couldn't get him to bed until 1:30am the very next night! This is driving me crazy! I bathed him tonight with the bedtime bath that is supposed to make the babies sleepy, used the massage gel even so the scent lingered, nursed him in his nursery in the rocking chair with the light off. It was 10pm and he was knocked out! As soon as I put him in his crib - bright-eyed and bushy tailed! It's now 11:15pm and my husband is rocking him and has been at it for about 30 minutes. I have already gotten him "to sleep" twice tonight only for him to wake both times as 5 minutes later. During the day he will fall asleep after I feed him and an earth quake won't wake him. I just don't understand why it is so hard at night. I even had to wake him from a nap today because he had been sleeping for 3 hours. I'm so scared that if he sleeps more than an hour during the day, I'll have the problem I'm having right now. Please help!

This may sound crazy, but it is a full moon right now and I think that sometimes throws things off!!! Hang in there! The baby is only 3 months old and it will take time to get into a routine - for now it's kind of anything goes. Welcome to parenthood!

I think the others are right - his sleep will even out as he gets a little older. I have a 4 MO and we are reading "The No Cry Sleep Solution" and I highly recommend it for this or any future sleep issues.

Your baby is very young and once he gets more and more of a daily routine he will probably sleep better at night. Do you swaddle him? My youngest woulndt sleep unless he was swaddled and I kept both of my boys in our room for a long time. My youngest didn't move out of our room until 10 months but that seemed too soon for him because as soon as we moved him he started waking all the time. At this age all they need is comfort and love from you. My youngest stopped napping when he was very young and only napped an hour during the day when he was a baby but if he gets a nap now he will stay up until 9 or so and we always put the boys to bed early by 6:30 which is still my youngests bedtime because he is so tired from not napping I've heard that putting them to bed earlier helps fall asleep and stay asleep better than putting them down late.

That is just how some babies sleep. It will be easier when he is a little older. my son used to sleep from 7pm to 8 or 9pm then wake up until 11:30 pm. He would eat and then go to sleep at 11:30 or so. This should normalize soon. For some reason the daytime they tune out a lot of noise and they can sleep through anything and then at night it is so quiet that sometimes they wake themselves up. Perhaps use a fan or something to make white noise. But many babies especially breast fed babies wake up every three hours or so at night, so sleeping 7 to 10 hours at night is a blessing!
