2Yr Old with White Tongue & Bad Breath NEED HELP (Not Thrush)

My 2yr old gets this from time to time which is a white tongue and really bad breath. I try brushing it off from back to front and it doesn't come off no matter how hard I scrub. It doesn't bother her or hurt her. The white spot is only on her tongue and the doctor keeps reassuring me that it isnt thrush. She even went to the dentist and he said it is the food that is trapped in the back of the throat or tongue. So that stays on her tongue and causes the odor. Like i said it comes and goes and it isn't thrush. I've been giving her lots of water too. She isn't much of a sweet eater only fresh fruits. Any other suggestions? Please help, thank you. I'm beginning to think these doctors don't know what they are talking about.

What can I do next?

I too have tonsil stones, like Brandi. BUT you can get rid of them without removing tonsils. you must eliminate certain foods from your diet and voila tonsil stones go away. You have to stop eating ALL dairy products, sugar and gluten. When I say sugar I mean the processed stuff added to foods, not fruits. I mean all the different names they give it now, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, cane juice, brown sugar, etc. It'll take a few months.

Hi,

Meat does cause a more foul odor, and I know that infants get white tongues from breastmilk... so maybe dairy too?

have you tried switching toothpastes? i get crest for kids, i don't let my son use any of those cartoon character ones, and aquafresh for kids (in the standup tube) is awful. we went through a huge hike in bad breath around this age too. must have something to do with a more grownup diet or something. hope you find something that works!

i personally have this problem. As a child i ALWAYS had probelms with my tonsils. THey told me that i have chronic tonsilitis. I went and say an ENT specialist and he wanted to remove my tonsils. he said i had "tonsil stones". well before i rushed off to get surgery i did some reasearch and found this.

does your daughter have any problems with her tonsils? My tonsils dont really bother me, sometimes tho, when i get a stone...(which is like weekly) it groses me out. but i dont find it necessary to rush off to surgery. i have no problems with my teeth, and the whiteness on my tongue doesnt really bother me either. i floss, brush, and swish daily. and when i feel like my mouth taste nasty... i either chew gum, toss in a tick tac, or mint.
you can PM me if you have any questions.

Hi K.,

Did the doctor actually do a culture to determine that there was no yeast involved? Fresh fruits can maintain a yeast infection if it's already there. There are MANY reason to have a white tongue. However, most have other symptoms as well so your diagnosing from more than that symptom. Several conditions that cause a white tongue are Scarlet fever, Kawasaki disease, Herpes simplex virus — type 1, or Lichen planus. If the doctor can't diagnose it you may want to take her to an ND or even a health store and let one of the managers look at it. It's amazing how much training many of them have.
