2 1/2 Year Old with 102.9 Fever, Not Eating, No Other Symptoms

My almost 3 year old has a fever of 102.9. She is also not eating (which is not normal for her). No runny nose, no other symptoms, just a fever. I got her to drink some apple juice earlier, but now she won't even drink that, she did have a popsicle. I gave her some Ibuprofen and it went down to 100.5, so I was happy it seemed to be responding, but now it is back up and she is not supposed to get another dose for about 1 1/2 hours from now. What could this be? I always get so nervous with fevers because she just feels like she is on fire. She says her throat and ears do not hurt and says she feels fine. Any suggestions on how to get her temperature to go down? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I love this site! I took Ali to the doctor yesterday morning. They said it is just a "virus" and it has to run its course. Thank goodness she does not have an ear infection or strep, or even the flu. Her temp was 98.4 this morning, then 103.6 in the afternoon. This is day three. Again, she is acting fine, singing right now to the Wiggles. I just wish her fever would break and go away! She is in day care but I've kept her home all week. Rather be safe than sorry. Thanks again.

Hi!
I know, fevers freak me out too! You can read one of my posts from about two months ago as I got quite a few helpful answers. My son had a fever w no other symptoms as well and I was going batty. It also returned twice after going away in an 11 day period. He did throw up with the last one. He rarely gets sick and the doctor kept saying it was a virus. I guess that is what is was. Always higher at night.
I hope your 3 yr old feels better...I know that mine does not like to tell me when he is sick because he knows he will go to the doctor.

I am so sorry to hear that your little girl is ill. First off though the last time I had a fever problem with my little girl also like you are I had taken her to the emergency room because i didnt know what else to do. She already had her dosage of either tylenol or motrin but the thing that shocked me was that even though she already had her dose before going to the hospital they gave her another dose while we were there and it was like 30 minutes apart. It usually says on the bottle just not to give them so many dosages within a 24 hour period. Also if she isnt eating be sure to make her drink plenty of fluids cause without the fluids it can hurt her even more. I don't know if this is any help but I did go through the similar situation. I hope that it helps you with deciding what to do about it and I hope that your little girl gets better.

My 2 yr old son just had the same thing last weekend (Sat/Sun). He ran a 102 temp for 2 days, didn't eat, and I gave him Motrin. I was convinced it was an ear infection and ready to take him to the doctor on Monday. By Monday, completely fine. There are so many viruses going around these days. Now all of us have the croop, and nothing you can do but let the cough take it's course.

It could be roseola. My oldest had 103 fever for 3 days when he was about a year old. No other symptoms, just fever. He was cheerful and happy. I can't remember if he ate or not because I was nursing still. He did do that a lot.

The fever broke on the third day, and then he got a rash all over his body.

You should not mess with a fever if the child is feeling fine. The only reason to do anything with a fever is if the child is very uncomfortable.

I would take her to the doctor, just in case. If she has not been vaccinated for Hib, they will want to rule that out. Otherwise, it just sounds like her little immune system is responding to something she was exposed to and her body is doing what it should. It's normal for kids not to want to eat during a fever. Try to get her to drink if you can, and stay away from sugar and dairy. You can also put a lemon compress on her, it draws out heat.

My youngest has a cold right now that started with a fever. It's been about 2 weeks and we still have it. Lots of stuff going around this time of year. I would absolutely keep her home from daycare if she's in one.

I was just thinking, it could also be a bladder infection. I would take her in today.

When my son & daughter were that young, they both had ear infections, same type of symtoms, fever, no pain, would not eat or drink. Responded well tomeds but then the fever went back. As it turned out the tolerance that they had for pain was very high, so they didnot feel the pain fron the ears. I would take her to the doc, as a sick baby visit & have her checked out. 1 time we waited too long for my daughter, (now15) & her ear drum expolded. No perm damage. But she did not feel any pain at all & the fever went back &forth. So I better svae then sorry, take her in to the doc!
Good Luck hope she feels better soon
