I'm looking for local trails that are close enough to go to last minute, but far enough away to feel like you've gone away from the city. Any ideas for good camping and/or hiking near Plano?

Thanks for the ideas. We started with the Heard and will check out the others as weather permits. We're ready for spring!

There's a great trail off HWY 380. Just take the Tollway until it dead ends. Make a right off 380 and then look for the signs for th Ray Roberts Lake trail or something like that. If you go to the Lake Ray Roberts site, it will give you more info.

Arbor Hills Preserve in Plano off of Parker and the Tollway. Just go east past Presby hospital and it will be on the right.
Irwin Park in McKinney is nice too - go north on Lake Forest off of 380 in McKinney.

For camping, try Hidden Cove State Park on Lake Lewisville. For a relaxing walking trail, try Arbor Hills in Plano.

We enjoy going to several parks around the area like Arbor Hills in West Plano, Bob Woodruff in East Plano, Ellison Park in McKinney, and the Heard Museum in McKinney. Cedar Hills is about an hour away, and they also have several trails. Please let me know if you'd like any other details.
