Weird Head Shaking

Hi, my daughter is 7 months old and a few weeks ago she started shaking her head vigorously from side to side. I thought it meant she was tired but she does it more and more. Has anyone else experienced this or know why she might be doing it? She seems to like it, too, because she always smiles while she shakes her head.

What can I do next?

My 7 mo. old son does this too, all the time. We love it. He makes us laugh, and sometimes when I do it back to him he laughs right along with us.

Hi there! My 9-month-old son does the exact same thing. As did my now 2 1/2 year-old daughter. So, I don't think it's anything to worry about. I think it's their way of having fun and getting excited. My son always has a huge grin on his face while doing it! We think it's adorable. Good luck!

My son did that when he was that age. He seemed to think it was great fun. I think it was his newest motor skill and he enjoyed testing it out. My other theory is that it made him a little dizzy, which kids seem to like (thus spinning around until they fall down) so why not him. My husband and I thought it was funny, so we did it right back. This would cause my son to giggle even more. Try it you might like it. It's amazing how babies can make adults act so silly : )

My aunt is a doctor and I had the same questions when my daughter was around 7/8 months. She told me that there is something in infants that thrills them when they become dizzy. She also said that when the child is able to stand they will spin themselves in circles for the same reason. When my daughter began to walk, it happened. It's just a normal part of development. No need to worry.

I agree with the other moms. My almost-11-month-old son does the same thing - and laughs the whole time through. He has a blast doing it! From what my sisters (and everyone else I know with kids!) told me, almost every baby does it! I'm sure your daughter is perfectly fine. : )

Sounds like an immaturity in her nervous system, she should grow out of it :) she might be smiling because it feels similar to when you play and shake her around gently ~L.

She could be just playing around, babies will do anything to get someone's attention! But if you notice other things like her limbs getting stiff or her eyes are fixed into a stare, I would take her to the doctors.

Hello, my name is T.. My son is 13 months old and he started shaking his head like that at about 6 months old. As he has gotten older I now realize that it is dancing that he is doing. He now puts the rest of his body into it. Anytime we get into the car or when his cartoons start to play a song he is ready to go. So, for your daughter it is probably the same thing, I just started dance with him and it became a playtime thing. Good Luck!!

My son use to do that too. He seemed to love it. It always made him laugh and smile. I think they are just experimenting with new motor skills that they discover. Now my son is almost one and he is experimenting with noises and that humors him to no end! :)

Hi there,

I have a 2 year old daughter who shakes her head from side to side when she is tired and getting ready to go to sleep. My husband and I thought it was kinda strange at first, but she does it all the time now when we lay her down. We figure its just her way to calm down after a long day and get her body ready to sleep. I am sure in your case its something similar.. I wouldn't worry about it. Take care...Marcia

my 7 1/2 year old used to do that, I think she just thought it was fun, but she did it so much she gave her self a bald patch along the back of her head. she was always laughing and smiling when she was doing it, I would just pick her up and play with her, it is probly just that she is happy and in a good mood-my daughter did it until she was able to move around and play by herself more.

Babies do such funny things when they are trying out there new bodies and brains. I have three children and I've seen many variations of this behavior. My youngest son is 17 months old and he did that side to side move. I would not worry at all. She is probably just checking out what cool things she can do with her head. I guess if your really worried though ask your doc.

My daughter did the same thing around that age. She thought it was hilarious! I think babies are just experimenting and figuring out how their bodies work.

As long as everything else seems fine, it's cool. You said she smiles while she does this, so it's likely just her enjoying how it feels. If she seems to do it all of the time, can'r seem to stop herself, and isn'y very alert about it, I might be more concerned. But, I'm convinced it's just fun for her.
