Vitamins for a One Year Old

My husband and I are not sure if we need to give our son vitamins. He is on the small end of the size chart and doesn't like to eat much. Someone told us we should think about giving him vitamins. We are first time parents and have no idea what to look for. What kind are best? Do they come as a liquid or are they pills like adult vitamins? Do we need to talk to our docotor first? Any advise would be great.

What can I do next?

I recommened a liquid vitamin. Eniva has a good vitamin called Vibe thay make it for adults and kids. I have been giving it to my kids since they were born. You absord liquids more than you do anything else. I do not recommend the gummy bear vitamins. Most kids' stomachs can't break down and digesets they gummy stuff. It will just go right through their system.

www.eniva.com or e-mail me and I can get you in touch with a consultant.

Most vitamins for kids come in chewable form. I know they have gummy bear ones, gumball ones and regular chewable ones. Before you do this you should definately give your doctor a call!

I would talk with your pediatrician first but many do recommend a vitamin once they turn one especially since most stop breast milk or formula after 1 and need iron. My daughter took Polyvisol which is in liquid form and was recommended by my pediatrician. It is not something they will take by itself because it is pretty horrible tasting but my daughter never noticed it if I put it into her milk. Now that she is older (3) she takes the flintstones children's vitamins that look like gummy bears.

My son on the other hand is not getting vitamins. He eats everything in site including lots of meat which my daughter didn't eat as much of. So he is getting plenty of iron. He also eats lots of fruits and veggies like my daughter. I suppose I should double check with the pediatrician for him too though whether he needs vitamins.

My daughter loves the gummy bear vitamins that look and taste like actual candy. The only downside is making sure you keep them up and away or they will eat them like candy.

We did the flintstone vitamins before that and she loved them too.

With my daughter it's like a treat to have a vitamin maybe because she only get's a limited amount per day. So she's always very excited to her vitamins.

Yes it does help with fighting and keeping away colds, viruses, and making up for the nutrients they don't always get especially with picky eaters.

My son is very small for his age (just 17lbs at 19 months) and is a picky eater. His pediatrician recommended a daily vitamin. We use a generic liquid form from Target. He takes it just fine without having to drop it in anything.

Don't worry, almost all kids are picky eaters at some point. Some things my boys liked when they were 1 they won't touch now at all...or maybe tomorrow they will devour.

we give our boys a generic multi vitamin from target, liquid form and we just dropped it in their juice too....

There's a website called newstarget.com where you can read an article on vitamins. I think it's called BioIdentical vitamins. Anyway, not that vitamins are bad for us (and we all know that even when we eat organic fruits and veggies, the quality of our soil is so depleted that we're not getting the nutrients we need), but some vitamins actually take away from us before giving back. (See the article.) Also, think twice before asking a doctor. Remember, the also prescribe drugs. If you're at all interested in the natural way to do things, check out a book by Jordan Rubin, The Maker's Diet and bend your way of thinking by checking out a little of what Mike Adams has to say on newstarget.com. It may be a shocking way of thinking at first, but I guarantee you'll find it interesting.

Both of my kids are picky eaters. I have been giving them vitamins for years. You can get a generic liquid vitamin from Target. I put a squirt into some fruit juice (100% juice of course) and they never even know they are getting it. And now that my oldest is 4, he gets a Flinstones' vitamin. He calls it his vitamin candy and knows he only gets one a day. That way its still a special treat. Just be sure to keep the vitamins out of reach of kids because they can overdose on them because of the iron.

When I was breastfeeding the doctor prescribed an over the counter liquid multi vitamin for the baby. We just put it in her formula bottle once a day.

We gave our daughter liquid vitamins every night in her bedtime bottle when she turned one. We used the Enfamil ones (they can be found in the vitamin aisle at Walmart). Now that she is 21 months we give her a Gummy vitamin every day and she loves it - it's like a treat.

ETA: Our duaghter is the pickiest eater alive! I swear she only eats a handful of foods. So the vitamin gives me peace of mind.
