Using the Word "Shoot""

Thanks to Cars 2 and my moms side of the family that hunts my 3 year olds current favorite word is shoot. When I hear him say it I tell him "we don't tell X we are going to shoot them. that's not a nice word. lets use the word X". It's not working. I know he doesn't understand the word and what happens when you do shoot but I still don't like him using the word. Tonight when the dog was barking he told his sister they should "just shoot the dog". Of course then his baby sister is saying shoot. UGH! Any on with a similar experience?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'll try just ignoring it and I know there could be worse words. We have gone thru a "dammit" stage (not so bad I know). I don't think I'm ready to show him videos of people shooting although his cousins whose father hunts watch hunting shows all the time so I guess that's another way to show it. Thanks!

The more you mention it and focus on it the more attention he is getting for saying it. Ignore it, let it go, don't mention the word to him again. He will outgrow it, if he doesn't when he is older you can sit him in time out each time he says it.

He's 3. Ignore it. THe more attention you pay to a "bad" word the more he will use it.
At least it wasn't the F bomb, thank you very much to my hubby for that one with my 2 year old.

At least he is not swearing worse words.

For example: Once I said the word "F" it, under my breath when I was major irked.
My son heard it. He then, later, started saying it, too!
And he knew exactly how to use it, correctly and when.
At least he does not say this at school and knows better.

I would look up videos on youtube of people shooting guns and bows and arrows and show him what shooting is all about.

IMO at least it's only the word 'shoot' be happy no one thought teaching a little one the f bomb. I know parents that it happened to.

I also know of a guy who didn't feel like babysitting a nephew on Saturday afternoon and taught him all the wrong terms for everything. He just thought it was funny. He would pat the floor and say chair and call chairs flowers ect. It took the poor Mom weeks to teach her child the correct terms for things. In a movie I could see it would be kinda funny but not to actually do it to a child.

I say "Oh shoot" instead of "oh sh*t" and my kids know shoot is not a bad word but we are not allowed to say we are going to shoot people. My kids are 3 and 5 and they know the difference in what I allow. I do allow shooting when playing monsters or something but when I hear the shooting I always make sure that it is not people.
