Does anyone have any experience with the Paragard IUD? It is the cooper one (non hormonal). I am considering it and have read everything that I can find on it... but was wondering if anyone could give me first hand experience.
Thanks for all of the responses!!! I went to see my doctor yesterday. I've tried every pill under the sun... and NONE of them work for me. Well, they work as in.. NOT pregnant but have two periods every month and have constant PMS! She suggested the 'ring'.. but when I told her that I hadn't completely stopped smoking yet, she changed her mind (I just turned 35). I asked about both IUD's and she really leaned more toward the Mirena. It only contains the hormone Progestrone and I would most likely stop having periods all together... where as the Copper one can cause heavier ones with more cramps! So...I go back when I start my next period to get the Mirena one!! Not sure why, but I'm kind of excited. After all of these years (and three kids later) I may have found something that I don't have to THINK about EVERY single day!!!

I would be very leary about the mirena, because I had one and I had to have it removed due to muscle spasms and very severe cramps. The doctor told me that when it was put in it was kinda crooked and was stuck in my tube and when it was removed it was attached to skin in my tube and ripped some tissue with it. I wouldnt recommend it, however you may have a different experience with it. Good luck!
i was told by my ob gyn that too many women have had problems with paraguard. i chose mirena. my advice, if you want long term birth control such as paraguard go with mirena instead. it doesn't contain copper so you won't have to worry about whether you're going to be allergic to the copper. u'd be suprised how many women have had bad reactions to the copper
I also have the Mirena IUD and have not had any problems with it so far. Going on 7 months now. Still have yet to have a period, but I am still breastfeeding. I didn't really look into the copper one, just saw all the info on Mirena.
Hey--if it helps, I've had the Merina IUD for 4 years now...it has been WONDERFUL!!!!!! I haven't had a period in over 3 years, occassionally I'll have light spotting, but nothing like the 2 - 3 periods/month I was fighting. I've had no trouble with it & almost DREAD having to have it removed next year! I used it for period control, my husband had a vasectomy before we met, so no kids for us, which is fine. But bye-bye to cramps, bloating, & flooding!!! Email me if you have any questions!!!
I have the merina IUD and I love it. No side-effects, no peroids (I have had it for 8 months), no weight gain, etc... My husband has also not noticed any changes.

Just got mine Nov.'o6....it's seems pretty great so far.A little expensive $500 & $125 for insertion. Not covered by insurance, but NOT as much as having another child,or $30 a mo. for pills (hormones :( )Just a liitle pain at time of procedure and light cramping after. Periods come on time w/ little cramping and 2 days heavy 2 days light. And good for up to 10yrs. and reversable.They offer your money back if for some reason it doesn't work for your body.Hope this helps, good luck
This is the birth control that I received after I had my daughter 5 months ago. At first it was great, I had my normal period for the first 2 months, but now I am non stop spotting. And now I am not covered by medicaid so I can't go to my OB. Before you get it ask your doc about how long you will spot. If you find out please let me know. Good luck.
I have had the Paragard IUD for almost two years now. I have had a few problems with it but overall it's been a decent experience.
For the first few months I had continuous spotting. Invest in pantyliners. Cramps were pretty intense and lasted all month long not just during my cycle. My first few periods were a little rough with the cramping and extended time of my cycle. It probably took about four or five months for everything to clear up and return to normal.
I've had two major infections within the first year due to the IUD. Both caused extensive spotting and abdominal pain. My doctor wanted to pull the IUD but I begged and pleaded with him not to. Took a course of antibiotics that cleared it up pretty easily both times.
In spite of the problems, I am happy with the IUD. It took my body a long time to adjust to it but since then it's been fine with no problems. It's easier than the pill, patch, or shot. I had problems on all of them as well. Hope that helps. Good luck!
