Tell Me .... Good or Bad Experience with a Vasectomy

Hubby had his done 3.5yrs ago. He went in, had it all done and came home, he took a few days off but his job it helps to have it healed more (military) He wasnt in too much pain at all. I never had to sign anything or go with him. LOVE the fact that he had it done because we now dont have any worries and it has improved everything!!! :)

My husband just had vasectomy this summer in June. He said the worst part was thinking about it beforehand. He didn't have any discomfort during the actual surgery and never needed to take any pain medication. He sat around for about 2-3 days with an ice pack in his lap. He didn't feel bad, but had a dull ache the first few days if he tried to stand for too long or do too much. Also, we were able to resume our sex life within a week, so not too much "down time" there! We haven't noticed any side affects. He will have to take in two samples to make sure the surgery was successful, so plan on staying with your current birth control method for at least 4 months after the surgery. Good Luck!

Becareful if he has one! My brother's grew back 3yrs after procedure and they had a suprise 3rd baby. My husband also had one and 2 years later his also had complications....I got pregnant w/ a suprise baby (would have been 3rd but miscarried). Twice in my immediate family w/in 1 year of eachother. There are also about 5 women I work with that either know someone of have had it happen to them. It is not 100%. I would recommend getting your tubes tied, it's not that bad of a procedure, actually.

Thank God for whoever invented vasectomies!!! My husband had one a month and a half ago and it went really well. He could only lift up to 10 pounds for two W., but that was the only restriction he had. He used lots of ice and really rested the same day and the following 2 days and didn't have much pain after that. I recommend getting it done on a Thursday or Friday, that way he can have the whole weekend to recover without taking too much time off and he should be ready to work by Monday. My husband also requested being put under general anesthesia (he was out for the entire thing) because he had heard from other people who only got a local and they said it was a little more painful. He only had to get an IV and that was it. The anesthesiologist gave him the meds through that. If you can afford it (some insurances won't cover that cost), we highly recommends it. I think you should really take advantage of your husband being up to it. Some men just refuse to go through it (my husband's friends think I "suckered" him into it). But if you both are sure about having no more children, this is a great solution and the risks with a vasectomy versus getting your tubes tied are so much lower.

My husband had a vesectomy after our 2nd baby and we could not be happier. It is nice not having to worry. We went in the morning and that night we went out to dinner. He said the worst part was getting the shot to numb him. It is outpatient and took less than an hour. He did walk a little funny that day. Not weird, just slower. If you are considering it, I would say go for it.

Ok S., here's the low down on vasectomys. I have two kids, one five and the other is three. I said when I got married that I wanted two kids, a boy and a girl. Well, that's what I got and that was all I was going to have. So then came the decision of birth control and who was going to do it. My husband said that he didn't want me to have to have surgery so he would get fixed. So, I said, OK SOUNDS GOOD!!!! We made the appointment and went, yes I went as well and got to see it all done! It was a very easy procedure that lasted maybe 30 minutes and that was it. All they do is numb their testicule area and then make a small cut, less than a half inch. Then they find the tubes, slightly pull them out, one by one and then they cut them and clamp them. The man feels nothing! He doesn't have to be sewed up because of where it is and the cut is not big...maybe a small bandaid. Then they can go home. My husband was a little sore like three hours later and a little the next day but an ice pack or a heating pad is all he will need. He was even playing with the kids that same day and went to work the next day. Don't worry about it..have it done, it is a good thing with very little if any after pains. Oh by the way...listen to the doctor when he says you CAN'T have unprotected sex for like 2 to 6 weeks. You have to allow time for it to heal and he could still have fertile semen left in his tubes. Hope all goes well, I know it will!

My boyfriend had the procedure done a month or so after our daughter. The entire procedure only took less than an hour. They gave him 2 valume right when he got there, he watched a video, the nurse prepped him, & the actual procedure only took 15 minutes. We went out to eat right after, he felt good. But, he was feeling too good, because he didn't go home & rest, he didn't feel much so he had lifted a few things, even though it was under like 25 pounds. He caused himself to be in some pain the day after & a few days after that. BUt, he was fine after a week & resumed normally...I highly recommend it, just be sure to tell him no matter how good he feels to be sure to take those few days of laying around...Good Luck!

Recovery time is short about a long weekend, and ice packs are definitely needed so keep a couple on hand, they help with swelling and tenderness. The one thing you need to remember is that the vasectomy is that it is not immediate birth control. A lot of women get pregnant after their husbands have this procedure due to not following certain precautions. He will need to go to the doctor every 3-6 months and give a sample which will be tested for semen, until he is cleared you will need to use back up birthcontrol. It could take up to a year for him to become infertile. I wish you the best, it is an awesome thing not to have to worry about birthcontrol, just make sure to have him tested.

My father in-law and a few friends of ours had one. They were all positive experiences. Besides if they do it during football season, they have a perfect reason sit sit on the couch for 2 days and watch "the game."

My husband said the thought of it was much worse than the actual surgery. It only took a few minutes in the doctor's office. He scheduled it for a Friday afternoon because he doesn't work weekends and it gave him time to recoup. The first day, he rested. By the second day, he was feeling pretty good. Just make sure you follow the doctor's instructions about follow up. Also, you will probably have to go with him for the procedure. The doctor wants to talk to you to make sure it's a joint decision. My husband had his done a year after our third child was born, Had it done in the morning and went back to work in the afternoon, had very mild discomfort. and that was that.

My husband went to Dr. William Flanagan at Upstate Urology Associates (the Greenville office). The procedure went fine and my husband never even needed to take any pain pills. HIGHLY recommend Dr. Flanagan.

M. husband had the procedure done on a Friday and was fine to return to work on Monday. I MADE him rest Saturday, he felt fine and wanted to mow the lawn. By Sunday I relented and he did all the yardwork. Do be aware that there can be a lot of bruising. It looked really bad the first day but M. husband said it didn't hurt at all.

I never looked into a tubal ligation, but from what M. husbands doctor said, a vasectomy is much less invasive with a much shorter recovery time, so the easier of the two options.

MY HUSBAND HAD HIS DONE WHEN WE WERE PREGNANT FOR OUR 3RD CHILD WHO IS NOW 2. THE ENTIRE VISIT TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR..THATS INCLUDING WAIT TIME AS WELL. THEY GAVE HIM PAIN KILLERS BEFORE THE ACTUAL PROCEDURE. HE TOOK SOME MORE THAT NIGHT BUT SAID HE DIDNT REALLY HURT SOO BAD. IT WASNT EVEN A FULL 2 DAYS LATER THAT HE WAS BACK TO NORMAL...ALTHOUGH ALOT OF THAT WAS BC THE PAIN KILLERS JUST MADE HIM BEAT. IT WAS ABOUT A WEEK WHEN WE WERE ABLE TO RESUME OUR NORMAL SEX LIFE. HE DID HAVE SOME BRUISING, BUT SAID IT DIDNT HURT.
HE HAD THE VASECTOMY SO I WOULD NOT HAVE TO GET MY TUBES TIED, WHICH IS A MUCH MORE INVASIVE PROCEDURE. WE COULD BE HAPPIER WITH NOT HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL ANYMORE....NO LONGER HAVE TO REMEMBER THE PILL, WEAR A PATCH, GET A SHOT, OR WHATEVER...ITS TOTAL FREEDOM!!!!!!
SOME UROLOGISTS WILL HAVE THE WIFE SIGN PAPERS AS WELL.....ATLEAST IN OUR AREA...OF THE ONES WE SPOKE WITH PRIOR TO HIS VASECTOMY, THERE WAS ONLY 1 WHO DID NOT REQUIRE IT.
THEY DO RECOMMEND THAT YOU ARE 100% SURE THAT YOU WILL NEVER NEVER EVER WANT ANY MORE KIDS. I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK. AND ALSO HOW AWESOME FOR YOU ...BEING MARRIED TO YOUR HIGHSCHOOL SWEETHEART!!!!!
