Stains on White Clothes

I just read where many of you had great ideas on getting ink out of clothes so I though I would ask and see what ya had to say about my stain problem.

I washed a load of white clothes and then put them in the dryer. I forgot about them until the next day. When I went to get them they were still wet so I turned the dryer back on to finish drying. As I was hanging them up I noticed rust stains in many places. Guess its time for a new dryer. I have bleached them, let them soak in bleach over night, and tried oxy clean. Nothing is getting the stains out. Does anyone have any suggestions.

This sounds strange, but put lemon juice and salt on them and put them in the sun. It has worked for me before with rust stains. Good luck!

I ran a drycleaners for many years. You may need a rust remover. You must follow the directions explicitly though, you don't want to eat holes in anything. Even be careful where you lay the cap.

BUT before you try that here is one thing you can try, it sometimes works. Lemon juice and salt (no, not to make a margarita so you can forget!) Splash a little lemon juice on the stains, sprinkle liberally with salt and rub, repeat a couple of times and see if that helps. It will sometimes remove rust and often remove mildew spots too.

You don't need a new dryer...go to Walmart...there's a product in the cleaning supplies section called WHINK Rust Stain Remover. It's a brown plastic bottle with white and yellow writing on the front. It works every time I use it. It's not expensive and it was recommended to me by the Kenmore repair man who came to check my dryer for the exact same thing! Ha! It's easy to use, just quirt a little on the stain and throw it in the washer...I've used it for years.

There is a product called Wink that is made to remove rust and it works great. I've been able to find it in grocery stores with the cleaning products. It comes in a smaller brown bottle and works great for bath tubs too!

My suggestion is to go to Dollar Tree down the cleaning aisle and get some Awesome! I'm not saying that I guarantee it to work since I haven't had that happen but I do know that it says it will get rid of rust. Hope it works for you if you try it.

I think someone else mentioned this, but I use Whink Rust Stain Remover for clothes. It comes in a brown bottle about 5 inches tall. It takes the stain out instantly and then I have always rewashed the clothes to get whatever chemical is in that product out. Don't soak the clothes in this just squirt a little on each rust spot. You probably need to look on the top shelf where the laundry products are or a hardware store. I cannot remember where I bought mine because that bottle lasts a very long time.

Bleach won't work on rust, you really need a rust remover. There's a product that comes in a brown bottle called Wink, you can usually find it at a small hardware store like Ace. Not sure if you'd be able to find it at JoAnn or someplace like that. I think Rit (the fabric dye people) might make a rust remover as well. That you should be able to find at WalMart or Target or a fabric/craft store.

Years ago I had the inside of my dryer painted as I always had these rust stains then I found out was the washer. I got a brand new Whirlpool and the lid was rusty. Under warranty they put in a new one and the new lid has the corners not well painted. So look careful. I think this is so we have to get new ones more often. Years ago I had a friend that sold lawn mowers to stores and one of them always broke after the warranty was up. She complained and they told her they were not going to fix it because then the consumers would not have to replace them sooner. So just look in there. I tried to paint it but it rubs off. For years I did not know what it was. I thought it was the detergents. G. W

DITTO on the Whink...it will most certainly get the stain out, but do not do this in your sink..it will take the finish off many products, like porcelain sinks, stainless steel drains etc. Believe me! I just did this at my daughters and now she has a dark stain on her drain in the sink! Do it outside and the WASH your hands and rewash the clothes! It does work!!

When my old washer put rust spots on my clothes, I got a product called, "RustOut" and used it. It worked perfectly. That might be worth a shot.

I use to have the same problem and found something called Iron Out. You can spray it on white clothes and it takes the rust right out. I believe I bought it at Lowes but could have been Walmart. Just don't use it on anything with color because it works like bleach. Good luck!

Carbona - small yellow bottles in the clothes washing isle. They have one for Rust. I have never tried the one for rust - but their bottles for many other things and they make a great product. I have used ink, lipstick, blood, grass and such. Good luck.

I love my Clorox bleach pen. It is a narrow-tipped pen at one end, and a brush at the other. Either side you use, you just squeeze the bleach "gel" out onto the stain. I know you said you soaked in liquid bleach, but I have found this pen works lots better than soaking. It's worth a try. Good Luck! :) C.

There are special laundry aids that remove specific types of stains, like ink or tomato juice or coffee. I know there is one for rust. It may be tough to find, though... you might need to look at the hardware store or the grocery store (weird, I always thought Walmart would carry them but I've never seen them there). It would probably be in the same place where the fabric dye is sold, like Rit Dye. Maybe you could even find it at Jo-Ann fabrics. Good Luck!
