Somethig to Remove Rust from Fabric

I have a favorite pair of white pants that got rust on them. I know for sure it is rust and I do recall there is a product for removing it but cannot recall. I think it may be called ZOUT but before I spend any money on it I was wondering if anyone has used it and if it works. I did try bleaching and it lightened it a lot but it's still there and now I would hate to wear them. Any other ideas?
Thanks this is a great group.

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions. I have not been to the store just yet to try any of them out. Been very sick and was in the hospital. They don't know what's was wrong with me. That's scary.

Hello C.:
The product is called Whink. It also works for carpet and upholstery stains involving rust. You can find it in the laundry supply area.
Good luck :)

I believe RIT has a product to remove rust from fabric. You can find it in the grocery section with fabric dye. It comes in a small box just like dye would come in. Good luck!

We have always had a problem, with our city water having rust in it so I have tried a lot of different products. Since it is on our city they have a product you can call and pick up at the water department that works great on whites. You could call your water department to see if they have anything for rust. Having dealt with rust a lot, I have tried Yellow Out and Iron Out and the work great too, but I think they bleach better than actual bleach so you have to watch to make sure there are no colors that get into that load, but definately if you have white socks wash them with those pants if you try it, they will come out super white. I have had the misfortune of a brand new green shirt I had getting rust on it terribly one year and I did find a product at Wal-Mart, and I do not know what it is called, but I found it near the dyes in the laundry isle that took the rust out without taking the color out. If your pants should happen to have any color on them, I would go this route.

I tried Iron Out and it never worked for me. Ever try Oxi Clean? Oxi Clean has cleaned a bunch of my stuff, but I never used it on rust and I know it is safe. Try using the Oxi Clean and let it actually soak for like a few days and see what happens. I know one of my friends husband used to get those armpit stains on white t-shirts and she would let them soak in Oxi Clean for like 2-3 days and the shirts came out pure white.

Good luck!!!

You are correct it is Zout. In the past I have sprayed Zout on the fabric, let it stand for a few mintutes, then use 1- part detergent 1- part Oxiclean and viola! the stain is gone:)

Best of luck to you!

I would recommend iron out (it is very harsh smelling) or a product called Whink Rust Stain Remover. It's in a brown tear drop shaped bottle. It is a liquid and doesn't have a bad smell. It also works great on sinks, tubs, etc, as well as clothing. I'm not sure if it's located with the laundry stuff or household cleaners, but either way it works great.

Hey C., do me a favor and try hair spray first, this is what we all used in Beauty school if we accidently got color on our uniforms. I have always put it on other stains as well. I hope you did not dry your pants before you had seen the stain, it will set in if you did. If you see the hair spray is working but still there continue to use the spray until gone and please let me know if it works for you! S.

there's also yellow out & white brite, both remove rust, iron, & various other stains out of your whites & make them look new again. FYI: if there's any color on them it will take it out, so make sure they are only white.

Zout is not strong enough to remove the stain. There is a product called Iron Out that will work. Follow the directions closely, but I use it regularly for a similar problem. We have rusty water that leaves stains on my daughters clothes and my favorite pieces. GOOD LUCK!

We have very rough water even with a water softener. I swear by iron out. I usually soak my loads of whites for quite a while in the hot water and iron out. It does the trick every time. It is pretty foul smelling stuff. You don't want to breathe it in and make sure there aren't any kids nearby when you use it. If the stain is really bad, try pouring a small amount of iron out on the stain and wetting an old toothbrush to scrub it. It will make a paste. Then soak. Hope you're able to save your pants! T. M.
PS. Iron out is usually NOT in the laundry section of the store. It is usually found around things like silver and brass polish, bottom shelf. You might have to ask for it.

I'm going to second the IRON OUT...I've delt with rusty clothes and this is the perfect product for that. But make sure there is no other colors in with the laundry.

Hey there C.! I see that you have had several responses, but wanted to add my own. We have a tremendous amount of rust in our water and the best thing I have used is just plain old lemon juice! No harsh chemicals, no bad smells and it's cheap too. If the rust stain is really bad I even just rub the lemon into it a bit - then set it out in the sun and presto chango the rust goes away. It has worked for me every single time. Haven't tried it on color fabric yet so I don't know how it would effect those, but it works great on whites!! Good Luck!!

Many years ago I had a pair of white pants that had metal on them and in washing they produced a rust spot.
In reading a helpful household hint book, it said to use lemon juice (which is a natural bleach) and rub salt in it right away, and then let it set in the sun for a while.
It worked great and I've used it a few times over the years.
