Somethig to Remove Rust from Fabric
I have a favorite pair of white pants that got rust on them. I know for sure it is rust and I do recall there is a product for removing it but cannot recall. I think it may be called ZOUT but before I spend any money on it I was wondering if anyone has used it and if it works. I did try bleaching and it lightened it a lot but it's still there and now I would hate to wear them. Any other ideas?
Thanks this is a great group.
So What Happened?™
Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions. I have not been to the store just yet to try any of them out. Been very sick and was in the hospital. They don't know what's was wrong with me. That's scary.

Hello C.:
The product is called Whink. It also works for carpet and upholstery stains involving rust. You can find it in the laundry supply area.
Good luck :)

I believe RIT has a product to remove rust from fabric. You can find it in the grocery section with fabric dye. It comes in a small box just like dye would come in. Good luck!

Many years ago I had a pair of white pants that had metal on them and in washing they produced a rust spot.
In reading a helpful household hint book, it said to use lemon juice (which is a natural bleach) and rub salt in it right away, and then let it set in the sun for a while.
It worked great and I've used it a few times over the years.

Hey there C.! I see that you have had several responses, but wanted to add my own. We have a tremendous amount of rust in our water and the best thing I have used is just plain old lemon juice! No harsh chemicals, no bad smells and it's cheap too. If the rust stain is really bad I even just rub the lemon into it a bit - then set it out in the sun and presto chango the rust goes away. It has worked for me every single time. Haven't tried it on color fabric yet so I don't know how it would effect those, but it works great on whites!! Good Luck!!

I'm going to second the IRON OUT...I've delt with rusty clothes and this is the perfect product for that. But make sure there is no other colors in with the laundry.

We have very rough water even with a water softener. I swear by iron out. I usually soak my loads of whites for quite a while in the hot water and iron out. It does the trick every time. It is pretty foul smelling stuff. You don't want to breathe it in and make sure there aren't any kids nearby when you use it. If the stain is really bad, try pouring a small amount of iron out on the stain and wetting an old toothbrush to scrub it. It will make a paste. Then soak. Hope you're able to save your pants! T. M.
PS. Iron out is usually NOT in the laundry section of the store. It is usually found around things like silver and brass polish, bottom shelf. You might have to ask for it.

Zout is not strong enough to remove the stain. There is a product called Iron Out that will work. Follow the directions closely, but I use it regularly for a similar problem. We have rusty water that leaves stains on my daughters clothes and my favorite pieces. GOOD LUCK!
