Stain on Onesies from Baby Poop

Updated on January 03, 2011

My baby is breast-fed only. He has had some blow outs, and left the yellow poop stains on his onesies. I tried pre-soaking in oxy-clean, then washing, but the stains did not come out. I did not dry. Any suggestions on how to get the onesies white again?

What can I do next?

DREFT stain remover works AWESOME! I never had a stain that didn't come out with it and I had all sorts of nastiness to get out from all those wonderful blow-outs to the first spaghetti or carrot meal! :) LOVE it and still use it even though my daughter is past the baby stage!

sometimes it just never comes out :( I did have some sucess with actually rubbing the oxyclean in and getting it to bubble up and then washing it. But on some onsies where it was a major blowout, it was a no go. Of course the key is to rinse it right away in cold water and rub the oxy clean in while it is wet and wash it in cold always. Good luck, I know how those little breast fed babies can really blow it out! When I started noticing too many blow outs I went up a size in diapers as well!

Some stains just never come out.
You can try rinsing in cold water immediately and soaking in Oxy or Shout. Fels Naptha is a great stain remover as well. But they just don't always get certain stains out. My babies who nursed had spit up stains that didn't come out either, no matter what I tried.
I just used the stained onesies for nap and night-time so if it happened again it was no big deal. They grow out of things pretty quickly anyway.

Best wishes.

Oxyclean stain remover or bleach on the stain. If you are concerned about the bleach and the baby's skin just run it through an extra rinse cycle.

A product called Awesome (from the dollar store) works the best. it comes in a spray bottle and spray and leave it until your next load and it should take the stain right out.

I always put the clothes after washing them outside to sun dry and always works as magic ..I now is winter but maybe around noon when the sun is stronger will work for you too..
I also use the oxiclean spray and the tide stain remover tabs when I'm not in a mood to hang clothes...

I use to soak them immediately in BIZ and hot water...for the entire day 8 hours or so! it is the only thing that took care of it. Once the stains are there, there is often nothing you can do.

I've been using Clorox 2 (the free and clear version) on my daughters clothes since she was an infant...it's easier on the clothes than regular bleach. It sometimes takes a wash or 2 but it gets clean. Good luck!

Using the same onesies for 2 kids, both breast-fed, I know your pain! I had great luck with a product called Totally Toddler nursery stain remover (I think there might be the same product with "infant" in the title, but what I have in the cabinet has the "toddler" name). I'm pretty sure I got this at Babies R Us in the laundry detergent aisle. Just rinse the onesie and spray it right away and then get it in the wash as soon as possible. Also the Dreft stain spray was impressive. I just used it this past week at my SIL's house for a blackberry jam stain on a new outfit for my daughter and there was NO sign of the stain left afterwards!

I breast fed both my boys for at least a year and currently nursing my 4.5 month old daughter. I was always able to get the poop stains out with some pre-washing with Dreft or even the Tide Free & Gentle. I just washed them in the sink with a little of the detergent to get as much as I could get out by hand. Then right before putting them in the washing machine I would put a little more detergent on any areas I wasn't able to hand wash out. And that always did the trick for me. They always looked good as new.

I find that tide gets our cloths the cleanest. Any stains I rinse quickly with cold water. I could never get those poop stains out though, but I did find that the swaddlers had fewer blowouts.

I'm loving the tide stain remover tabs. They got off some spagetti stains I didnt realize my daughter had gotten on her favorite pants.

Sunshine. I know it sounds weird, but I'm a cloth diaper momma, and after washing hanging them out on a line in the sunshine always gets the stains left from the washer out. I'm sure there are other products out there that can treat it and fade it and get it out, but good old sunshine works for me, and it's free! (on a good day, *laugh!*)
