Sore on My Toddler's chin...what Is It?

My 19 month old has had a sore on his chin for the past 3 days. On day 1 - it looked like a small red abrasion - I figured he had bumped into something or a bit of a scratch. Day 2- the center began to look "soft" like a scab but not at all hard - just the opposite, looked soft and soggy. Today, the same. It's very small - a bit smaller than a pencil eraser. It is the only sore on his entire body or around his mouth. He does not act bothered by it. Nothing out of his normal routine has occurred, no new foods, etc. Today, after lunch, I wiped his face off with a wet paper towel and it began to bleed :( I feel like this could keep getting worse....anyone know what it is or how I can protect this sore?

I don't think it's a cold sore based on pictures online. I also feel like it needs some sort of protectant on it, but surely I can't put petroleum jelly or something on it because it's open, right?

What can I do next?

My son got something like that a couple times except his was a nickel to quarter in size. I am pretty sure they called it Impentago. I got a prescription cream to put on it I think it was Bactraban and it cleared up right away.

Good suggestions below. Also wanted to throw Eczema into the mix. My daughters are prone to it, especially if the weather has been colder than usual, or windy. It can look like a scab, and it just won't heal (unless you put hydro-cortisone cream on it, and then it heals right away).

Like the others said- Probably impetigo which is basically just a staph infection. Put a little hydrogen peroxide on it, along with the some neosporin. Should clear up on it's own.
My son just had impetigo inside his nose and it didn't respond to this treatment. He tested positive for MRSA and is now taking oral medications. If it doesn't clear up with treatment or continues to worsen despite treatment, call your ped.

Impetigo. Very contagious, very common. I would make a trip to the doc, they will probably give him an antibiotic either topical, oral or both.
