Son Is Constipated - Grand Rapids,MI

My 3 1/2 year old son is constipated. This is the first time that he has had this problem. I've heard that I can give him Karo syrup to try to help him, but I can't remember if I'm supposed to give him the light or dark kind... I don't want to make his situation worse! Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well, since this is the first time that this has happened to him, I didn't want to overreact and call the doctor or start medicating him, so throughout the day, I gave him lots of 100% juice and water. 2 of his juices had the dark karo syrup added to it. By the end of the day, he was back to normal and so were his bowels. I had already pushed the fluids the day before, so I don't know if it was the second day of fluids or the karo syrup that did the trick, but something worked. Thanks for all of the advice!

Use the dark Karo syrup. I had to use this for my son when we were trying different formulas. Also, milk of magnesia works wonders and instantly. The karo syrup didn't work for my son, but i've heard it works for other children. The milk of magnesia will work within the day, and it isn't painful. Good luck.

I have used a variety of all the things listed. I did the (light) corn syrup when my kids were babies and have used the diluted prune juice. My son will drink the prune juice and my daughter won't. I have used the Miralx personally but never given it to my kids. Also if he likes granola bars get the bars called Fiber One. He won't even know he is getting something to help the constipation. Also just talk a lot about eating good fruits and veggies to help you poop easier. 3 year olds are pretty fascianted by the topic and it's good to help them to start understanding good nutrition and what the body needs. Also remember bananas, applesauce, rice and too much milk/dariy can cause constipation so limit those items. Good luck!

I've not heard of giving Karo syrup before but I have heard of molasses. Either way, it's the dark kind. :0)

Prunes and prune juice! You can water down the prune juice if it taste too strong. My kids think that prunes are really big raisins! Cool! Apple Juice, apple sauce and apple cider have lots of fiber and work good too. Lots of water and fruit.

Hi A.,
Been there and done that with all 3 of my kids... If he likes grapes, just give him some nice sweet cold grapes to snack on and wait for nature to take its course... it always woks for me. Good luck!

I've only heard the Karo syrup thing for babies, but it might work for older kids. I usually just push liquids, juice and water(I think dairy will make it worse), and fresh fruit when my kids have a problem going.

My daughter had the same problem when she was younger. The ped. stressed to us to make sure she drank some apple juice every day. It did the trick. Good luck!

Hi A.,

My daughter was constipated and the pediatrician said that we could give her Miralax - it is over the counter and works great with no side effects. You can mix it in the his juice and he will never know as it is almost tasteless. Hope this helps.

Miralax is good - Benefiber in juice is also great. I've never heard of the Karo Syrup thing - we tried Mineral Oil mixed in yogurt - the recommendation of ped. The benefiber worked the best.

I would talk to your doc.

It could be a number of things. Are his stools very hard and pebbly? does he have a hard time pooping? Are you potty training?

some kids are afraid of pooping in the big potty- and even some who are trained- if they get splashed- it can be traumatic!

In the mean time increase his water and fiber intake. Lots of fruits and veggies and bran. there is a great recipe for Raisin Bran muffins- my kids LOVE them. it makes a bunch and you can keep the batter in your fridge for a few weeks (if you can get it to last that long without eating them! YUMM).

get some baby food prunes and mix it with water and other pureed fruits or even yogurt- it makes a great smoothie
