Something in His Nose?

I think my son stuffed something up his nose but I can't see anything! He is always putting things up there, but usually you can always tell. He cries when he sneezes and is always poking at his nostril. PS: I tried to take him to the pediatrician today, but after waiting 2 hours, we had to leave!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My son is 21 months old, btw....So we went to the doctor, and it seems whatever was up there is now gone. But the nose tissues were all swollen and irritated, on it's way to an infection. She gave him an antibiotic to kill the infection and an anti-inflammatory for the swelling. We'll never know what it was, but if it happens again(probably will, too!) I have all these techniques to try out. Thank you for your suggestions, it really helped!

PS: He tried to stuff a peanut up there this morning!

Depending on what he put up there, it will start to smell after a while. You want to get to it before it reached that point, as the smell is an infection. I'd get someone to look as soon as possible.

he needs to be seen. today!
if he usually does it with the same kind of toy/object put them out of reach~ you don't mention his age, so i don't know whether he's old enough for you to explain to him.
if he isn't old enough to understand...keep all small objects out of his reach! good luck~ :)

I had to comment on this one. My son did the same thing when he was about 8. We were at a boyscout event when he fell face first and his nose started bleeding. When I looked, and felt...something was wrong. We thought he broke it. Er trip! Doc said it looked okay, just swollen (didn't take into account the obvious "mass"). Next day, it was apparent something white was sticking out one side...it looked to us like bone. Back to doc. Doc said the same thing..."he should be fine. It's probably just a blood clot". Erg. Next day, the "thing" was VERY evident. Took him to see a different doc. Doc pulls something white out of his nose with tweezers and says "what the heck is this?". Let me tell you I have never been more mortified in my life. It was a white, round LEGO! The doc then left the room (to laugh I'm sure) and my son yells "Canaan (brother) did it"!! Apparently he had put it up so far (days before) that it took falling on his face to dislodge it!
Nothing like a little comical medicine. Good luck. I hope you figure it out.

Both of my kids did that same thing. My son never told me so it ended up turning into an infection. My daughter had a rock up there and my mom told me to have her do a farmers blow. Cover the nostril thats ok and blow. If whatever it is up there is not up there too much it will shoot out. Gross but it works

K.,
Try an Urgent care place. They have a tool called an alligator that reaches up into noses for problems such as this. It is very common and will most likly happen again. We try ro watch our kids all the time but the minute your back is turned something always happens. It is called life.
Good Luck,

I thought my son had done the same thing, so I took him to the ER because if you are pretty sure there is something up there, they need to take an xray, so the pediatrician probably cant help.

Hi K.,
Yes, he needs to be seen by the doctor. My little one had a constant runny nose and the doctor wanted to take a looka the adnoids for a foreign object. I asked if he thought she stuck something up there and he said, "Oh Yea". It may have gone all the way through.

Best of luck.

I agree...you need to get in to see a doctor, either your pediatrician or urgent care, and if none of those work, then the ER.

Good luck!

My niece stuck a bead up her nose and he mother pulled out the vacuum cleaner hose attachment and sucked it out of her nose. Sounds odd but it worked for them. And I love telling that story. Good luck!

Hi K., My son got a rock in his ear when he was seven. The pediatrician couldn't get it out and had to send him to a specialist! You probably need to see the pediatrician at least to get the referral. Good luck!

I worked as a preschool teacher for seven years and then a home care provider, I've seen this done several times and have performed it myself. Give a nice blow of air in his mouth if something is in his nose it will come shooting out.
