I had to call my son into school today because he fell asleep. NOT a fan of a 12:37 pm start.

I tried to wake him up but he was OUT COLD.

Anybody ever call their kid in because they took a nap and didn't wake up in time for school?

Added: last year he had school in the morning and did great. He's doing well because I asked his teacher daily when I pick him up. He has an IEP and by the time we had our meeting for placement ALL the morning spots were filled. My ONLY other option was to switch schools and I felt this was the lesser of two evils.

What can I do next?

I haven't but I think that it's not at all unusual for a 4yo to do this. You could force him to wake up but I'd do the same as you. At this age missing a day of school will not hurt him. Being "out cold" indicates that he needs the sleep.

My son still needed a nap when he was that age, and because of how his birthday fell and when he was starting kinder, we felt like we needed to put him in preschool and could only get and afternoon slot. He was fried by the end of the day and had all kinds of behavioral problems because he was just so tired that he couldn't keep it together.

When kinder started we found we were on an afternoon class and I got on the wait list for morning and BEGGED that he get an a.m. slot. I wouldn't have started him otherwise because I knew he's do poorly.

So I guess my obvious solution is, if you have the option, I'd see if you can get an a.m. slot for your little guy. I doubt that he's getting much out of school if he's so tired by midday that he needs his nap. And if he's starting kindergarten next year it will be good to get him used to the routine of school starting first thing in the morning.

Trying to alter my sons wake time or give him and early nap never worked for me...

My youngest son had morning Preschool and morning Kindergarten, he always came home exhausted and napped. The problem got to be in 1st grade when he went to school all day. For the first 2 or 3 months he would fall asleep at his desk. The teachers told me that they tried to keep him awake but finally gave up and figured he needed that nap. He was 7 at that time. He went to bed at 8 and was up at 7 so it wasn't that he wasn't getting enough sleep at night. I think it he will be ok after he gets use to the schedule. You may try putting him down for a hour around 10:30 so he can rest before school.
