Hi Mama's!
I'm at a loss and could really use some suggestions. I'm scheduled to be the mystery reader for my son's 2nd grade class in a couple weeks and I'm at a loss of what to bring to read. My Son is usually reading chapter books now days so I'm not sure what book to get at the library that would be interesting to 2nd graders. (have about 10 minutes to read the book)
Any suggestions?

Alexander and the terrible awful no good very bad day. My kids loved this book in 2nd and 3rd grade. its not a chapter book it is just really funny. I bet they would love it.

I read the "Giving Tree" to 3rd graders last year...that is if you can get thru it without crying.

Dr. DeSoto is an oldie, but goodie. The kids enjoyed this as a read-aloud in my son's first grade class. It would be appropriate for second graders as well.
The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Pinkwater. This book is a little unusual, so there's a good chance that a lot of kids won't have read it. It's short(easily read in 10 minutes) and sends a powerful, positive message of building community while maintaining one's own individuality. Great pictures, too, which make for a good discussion, if you have time.

the Club Penguin Books have ones where the kids can vote on what to do next ("if you think we should look in the hole" turn to page 22 - "if you think we should run past the hole" continue on...........
when I read them the kids raised their hands to vote and majoirty ruled - and they loved it!

Email the teacher, she'll have great ideas about whatever it is the kids are into these days, and you can read ahead so you get a little "practice" :)
She'll Silverstein where the sidewalk ends. Choose several of these easy humerous poems and when I did it I. Brought a snack tied into the last on I read. It kept the kids engaged and was a good way to say poetry is fun.
