Hi everyone,

I have been asked last minute to be a mystery reader for my son's second grade class. I have no idea what to read to them, especially since I was given such little notice and of course I just want them to love the book I read!!!! Wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks so much:)

my son is in second grade and the teacher reads them the Skippyjon Jones books and there was one other called "I've got to go pee" that's really good about a kid who's parents are always reminding him to go before an event and he never does but has to 5 minutes later.

I teach second grade. My class loves any of the "Old lady who swallowed a fly" or "coyote who swallowed a flea" "lady who swallowed snow", etc.

What book does Your son Love??
hope that helps you could always ask a librarian.
I'm guessing this is a one time deal and you are just reading for a 10-20 minute span. I would skip the chapter books if this is the case.
Have fun!!

I am student teaching in a 1st/2nd Grade split class and here are a few suggestions: (based on opinions/reviews from my students and in preference order)

Tacky the Penguin (or any books from this series)
The Naked Mole Rat
Tops and Bottoms
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse
My Lucky Day

Good luck, I'm sure that the class will enjoy your read aloud!

How long of a book does it have to be? The Magic Treehouse books are great for 2nd grade but are a bit long. Kate Di Camillo's Mercy Watson books would be fun - illustrations are hilarious and very popular with my DDs' classmates when they were in 2nd grade. http://www.katedicamillo.com/books/mercy1.html
Chris Van Allsburg's picture books also went over well for read alouds (I read "The Widow's Broom" at halloween to a class of 2nd graders last year and they loved it - Jumanji, the Gardens of Abdul Gazasi, Probuditi, and others would also probably go over well with this age group) http://www.chrisvanallsburg.com/books.html

I don't know how much time you will have to read, but when my daughter was in the 2nd grade, she love the A-Z mystery books. They are super long, but it isn't a quick read either. Kids seem to love the Junie B. Jones series as well, but the grammar in them is awful. Still they are very cute stories.

You might ask the teacher what to read also. She will have great ideas for you.

Tonight (with my 2nd grader) we read Why Oh Why are Deserts Dry.

Last year, my son's class loved the Froggy books...they've got tons of examples of onomatopoeia--and the kids like to pick those out.

You can do 2 Froggy books in about 20 minutes.
