Removing Spit up Stains?

We are expecting our 2nd boy in January. I just pulled out all of my first son's newborn -6 month clothes to start getting the nursery ready. My first son had very bad reflux, so he was spitting up ALL THE TIME - but when I put away his outfits, they looked fine. When I got them out yesterday - they're all yellowed and stained! Is there a way to get these stains out? Poor 2nd kiddo is going to be all messy from day one!

If the OxiClean doesn't work, try Shaklee. It will definitely get the stains out, and it won't damage the clothes.

I had the same exact thing when I had my 2nd dtr after her sister's clothes had been in storage for about 5 years. I was so sad to see all the yellow stains even though they were "clean" when I put them up! I also used Oxyclean. I had tubs everywhere! I put lots of oxyclean in there (although unlike heather B I used warm/hot water to dissolve the powder), then added cold water to finish filling it up, then added the clothes. I also left them for a long time, like 24 hours. If they were really really bad and I could use a toothbrush with a little bleach, I did that too. I was able to save everything except for one outfit that wasn't that special to me anyway. Good luck and don't get frustrated! I had about 6 months of clothes to do (we finally got on medicine for the reflux!) and it took me a while. You'll be happy that you took the time to get the stains out and your heart will feel so full when you see your new baby in your older son's clothes! Blessings!

For this time, remember that spit-up is protein-based, so you will want to rinse immediately in cold water and wash in cold as well. A protein (spit-up and poop) will set in hot water.

I second Shaklee laundry products! Nature Bright is a must have at my house.

Hi J.,
That very same thing happened to me. At that time, someone had given me samples of Shaklee's laundry products to try. I wasn't even trying to get the stais out--I was just going to use them for play clothes. The stains came right out. Because of that and how much the supplements helped me, I became a distributor.
Ilove that the products are safe and nontoxic.
If you would like some samples, let me know. You can check the products out at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife

You can try a small amount of bleach in a normal wash cycle on the lights and whites. The Clorox Bleach pen is also awesome and it's ok to use on items that are mostly white. If you're nervous about the bleach and for colors, this is a process but it usually works- I had a couple things that I had to sacrifice but luckily they were inexpensive sleep n plays. Try spot treating them with oxy clean first, then wash them on the warmest setting possible with a scoop of oxy clean and your detergent Don't dry anything until you make sure the stains are gone. Check them in the day light. If they aren't, then soak those items in a bucket of oxy clean solution for at least 24 hours. Wash again, make sure you use a double rinse cycle to get all the residue out, if you can find Baby Oxy it rinses out more easily.

J.,
Try soaking the items in OxyClean overnight. I've used that to remove some stains that I couldn't get out any other way. Plus I remember reading about it in another Mamasource question about a year ago. Maybe you can find it in their archives?

formula stains are very difficult to get out. I think it's all the minerals they add to it or something.

My best recommendation, which is what we've done for a lot of our older daughter's clothes, is get out a big 5 gallon bucket. We put in a big scoop of oxyclean powder and cool water, fill it halfway, and then put clothes in until it looked like they wouldn't all get well covered. Then we let it sit overnight. Something over 24 hours. Then we would wash that set of clothes with our free and clear detergent and another scoop of oxyclean.

That method saved a fair amount of clothes.

Alternatively, save yourself some time and let him look messy. Save any cute new outfits you get as gifts for pictures. I'm sure he won't mind as long as he's getting his mommy loving.
