Relief for Stuffy Nose

Hi J., I'm sorry to hear about your son's difficulty breathing and all of his discomfort. I have a 10 week old little boy who has apparently begun teething quite early, and has begun to produce lots of mucus which clogs his poor little nose resulting in difficulty breathing and major fussiness. His pediatrician just recommended Simply Saline for Babies - it's a 0.9% sterile saline solution in a tin bottle with a small spout which fits directly into baby's nose. You just insert the edge of the spout and press down for 1 second to get some saline mist up the nostrils. I know this sounds uncomfortable, and your son may protest at first, but it is certainly helping my little boy so you may want to give it a try. Saline irrigation is now highly recommended by allergy specialists and doctors for sinus health and prevention of colds/relief of allergy symptoms. Be sure to get the Simply Saline FOR BABIES which has the appropriate sized spout for little noses. You may use this as many times a day as you wish - the solution is preservative free and non-habit forming. CVS, Rite Aid or any pharmacy should carry this, and it's about $6.

have you tried saline drops? you can get them at any drug store. i have used them at one time or another on all 3 of my kids when they were babies and it works fairly well. the baby tolerates the drops well. it usually just makes them sneeze which is good...it gets rid of the mucous at least for a while. i am always surprised at how long it works. in my kids' cases it allowed them to get about 4-5 hours of sleep at a time which goes a long way in helping them recover. good luck.

Your poor little one. I feel your pain. I have 3 boys and my middle son has had allergies and the stuffies since he was born. I have found that one of the best and easiest tricks is to put Vicks vapor rub on the soles of their feet and then put on socks at bedtime. Sounds strange, but it works wonders.

Hi - my little one (also 6 months old) has been 'stuffy' almost since he was born. What i've found that has helped is using a saline spray (don't get the drops, there is a great one called Simply Saline for Babies, be sure to get the one for babies)... it's a very fine mist of purified water, i do this at every diaper change. Also, in the morning and at night i'll put the Infant Vapor Rub on the bottom of his feet then put on socks. We also have the cool mist vaporizor and used to angle his bed, but not needed anymore.

Just a note, i've read and been warned by my doctor not to use the 'bulb' or 'nasal aspirator' - or at least don't use it often as it can irritate the sensitive nasal lining.

I have had great success and so have my grandchildren, eliminating our allergies via NAET. Let me know if you want a recommendation for a local doctor who is certified in this technique.

Anything you are feeding the baby have dairy in it? There are natural ways to fight allergies, what is he allergic to?
Can you take that away? Air purifier? The Atmosphere air purifier is excellent!!!If the meds are not helping him do you have to wait a while or could you be giving him something he does not need.

Best thing ever: Vicks on the bottom of the feet, and then put socks on(so they cant get it in their mouths). It works wonders.

I too have used the saline drops and nasal bulb. My daughter is now 1yr. and although she is not a fan she will let me use the sucker and the nasal saline.

use the nasal asperator before bed and naps with some saline. my daughter got put on zyrtec around that age. i would say that if the meds dont kick in and start to help after a week then cal his dr. also maybe try childrens benadryl. at that age my daughters dr okayed 1/4 tspn of it but i always gave her a little less then that because it made her drowsey.

One more plug for Simply Saline. Great stuff. you can also do a little reflexology on his feet. Just a little light massage on his toes and the pad under his toes. The pad reflexes his chest. There is a point for the sinuses on the outside of the big toe.

One of the best things you can do is take him to see a chiropractor. He is not too little and you will be amazed with the results.

Is he eating any dairy? Are you breastfeeding and eating dairy? Very often a candida issue is misdiagnosed as allergies. If you and he is ingesting ANY dairy, you might want to take and/or give him PB8. It's a boradspectrum PRo-biotic and within a few days, the congestion goes away. I open the capsule up and dump whatever my kids need in their mouths and I take it when I've had pizza or wine, etc.

I can tell you that he doesn't have a ceterizine deficiency, so you might want to find out why he has this issue. Also, using Bounce and Tide can increase this problem for many people.
