Hello everyone,

My daughter is 16 months and has a really really bad diaper rash. Her skin is so sensitive that she got really red and blistery. I just dont' know what to do. I mean I thought that I changed her enough. Sometime I even change her just so she doesn't have a dirty diaper. If anyone can help me with sensitive skin that would be wonderful

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I actually used both cornstarch and a whole bunch of it with desitin and it actually got better within maybe 2 days. I really just been applying powder and corn starch and she hasn't gotten a diaper rash ever since. I just been watching her dirty diapers. Thanks

Have you used Balmex? My oldest had diaper rashes and still has sensitive skin. The only thing that helped was balmex and lots of water. Good luck.

Hi S.,

Try baking powder (not soda). I know that sounds gross, but it will soak up all the oil from the rash and keep it away from her skin. A few times my kids had really bad rashes and it was amazing how well it worked. Good luck.

PS. Aveeno Oatmeal baths are great! My son still has excezma and i use it.......

Hi. When my son was 6 weeks old he had really bad diaper rash. Our docotor suggested giving him a bath with backing soda and water. Also when we changed his diaper he said to not use wipes and to clean with washcloths and bakingsoda and water. We just put the mix into a squirt bottle and squirted it on him. We didnt think it would work...but it really did. Granted he didnt smell so good (baking soda just doesnt have that clean baby smell) but it worked and that was all that mattered. Good luck.

S.,

I have a 2 1/2 year old son with very sensitive skin and I found that he gets a diaper rash like the one you described after he eats a food to which he is allergic, strawberries (my nephew just got the same thing after eating scallops).

I use Desitin or Dr. Boudreaux's Butt Paste to treat the rash, but I know that Aquaphor works very well also.

I hope she feels better soon!

Hi!
Globs of A& D ointment work great .. but also consider her diet... ie too much acidity in juices and fruits etc might be the culprit as well
also it may be a fungal infection at this point too and that might require a rx for an antifungal cream

Any time my son has even a sign of a diaper rash we put on Boudreaux's Butt Paste and it's gone. If your child's skin is that sensitive try washing with Cetaphil cleanser in the tub instead of regular baby soap. Good Luck!

hi S., my son had really sensitive skin, first of all, change her often, not only after a bm, sitting in pee will irritate too.
also, dont use wipes of any kind, just use damp paper towels. i used to use the clean empty container from the wipes, and fold up a whole stack of paper towels into it, pour on some filtered water and use those. or just leave a roll of paper towels and a sport bottle of water at the changing table. less prep but not as handy if you have a squirmy daughter. whichever you are using, be sure it stays very clean, smell it.
triple paste works great, as does desitin - the original, not the creamy - and load it on. sometimes i use ammens medicated powder, that helps too.
also, my son used to get horrible rash from any citrus fruit or juice, and if you are breastfeeding, she may get it from things in your diet, my son used to get it if i had more than a glass or so of orange juice.
let her air out as much as possible.
if you are using loads of paste, as you should be, you dont have to wipe it all off after just a pee, the stuff is hard to get off and during a bad rash it does more harm than good as long as she is well coated.
if none of this is working, she may have a yeast infection, my son had one for a long time, only an anti-fungal will work, like lotrimin, but see the doctor for a definite diagnosis, you dont want to use it if thats not what it is, and you do not want to use it too much. if thats what it is, your doc will show you and you will learn how to recognize it yourself.
good luck, D.

definately clean with soap and water after EVERY diaper change, use the triple paste and also when possible let her run around without the diaper. HOWEVER, if there are blisters I would definately take her to the doctor...this may be a sign of impetigo and in which case she will need antibiotics.

Go to your local pharmacy and ask for Triple Paste. It is expensive and they only keep it behind the counter. It works so it is worth every cent. For bathing I would reccomend a cream cleanser as opposed to a baby type bath. Aveeno makes great products. Check with your local health food store they may have some good natural products for sensitive skin.

I would bring her to the pediatrician just to make sure its nothing more than a diaper rash. You know, like a candida infection or something. But actually one of the best things to let them do is to have them run around diaperless for as long as you can because that will let the rash dry out some which is what it needs.

My daughter and son used to have terrible diaper rashes. We've tried many things and what worked best for us is something called "Triple Paste". At the time, we had to get it from the pharmacist (not an Rx, just behind the counter), but I think you can get it in the aisles now. If not, ask the pharmacist. It works like a dream!! Also, try using warm washcloths instead of wipes, they just cause irritation and can be harsh. For nighttime, I would put the 'Triple Paste' on first and then Johnson & Johnson Powder with cornstarch(yellow label).
Good Luck!

I agree with the moms who say to let her go without a diaper to dry it out for awhile. But what actually works even better is letting the baby air out outdoors in the sunlight (it really helps heal diaper rash fast) - with the weather so great, bring a blanket out to your yard and just let her roam bottomless for a couple hours and then apply Butt Paste (avail at walmart). Best of luck!

Hi S.,
Have you tried Triple Paste. It is thicker then desitin and balmex. Also it might be a yeast infection. If none of the over the counter stuff works I would take her to the doctor and have them take a look at it. If its a yeast infection they can give you a prescription ointment for her.
I hope this helps.

Hello,

First you want to make sure that the kind of diaper you are using is not causing the rash. I use to use pampers and had to switch to huggies because it would cause my daughter to get a rash if she wasn't changed right away.

The next thing is I have been using Eucerin - Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment on her and I find that is the only thing that works.

Check it out.

ok i have twin boys and they used to get diaper rash bad my mom told me it was cause i didn't change them enough but like you i changed them a lot. if you are giving her juice cut it with more than half water or watch her fruit and veggie intake some time the acid in these can hurt. i use ONLY aquaphor you will find it in the hand lotion section of shoprite or food store . put this on ALOT . and at night use it and put baby powder over it . the powder stops the diaper from soking it up . the one thing that i do still if they get it is when i changed them is to wash them in the sink in warm water. with baby soap. and just blot it dry. this does help , this stuff is great . i give it to all new mom's , i should take stock in it.

S.,
Hi, there are many ppl who have suggested many different kinds of diaper rash cream, and i'm sure they're all good, but there are sooo many to choose from. i myself have tried most of them on my daughter (and while she never got the rash, she was almost always red). i finally used AQUAPHOR. my mother suggested using it, she said that she used it both on me and my brother and we NEVER had a rash (maybe a tiny one during teething, but other then that, nothing). I used it on my daughter, and like my mother said, NO RASH other then 1 time when she had 4 teeth coming in at the same time. I like the AQUAPHOR because it doesn't leave a nasty greasy residue when you change her diaper the next time, it's clear (just like vasoline), it seems to instantly soothe them, AND you can you it for just about anything (my husband had horrible chapped lips and used it, almost gone overnight). plus, i use it just about every day, ever diaper change on my daughter, and i've only gone through 1 full tub, and a lil bit of another (and the tubs are only $16.99...not bad for almost 1 yr's worth of diaper rash cream). But like the other women said, i would let her air herself out for awhile before you put the diaper on, maybe (if you use AQUAPHOR) put it on with the next diaper change, then the change after that, let her air out for awhile..it does say on the site, that it's guaranteed to make the rash (start) go away w/in 6 hrs. well, good luck on what you choose to use...with so many good suggestions, things can be overwhelming. GOOD LUCK. oh, if the rash doesn't start going away w/in a couple days (no matter which cream you choose) definitely call her dr.

hi S., the best thing ever is this natural herb called Bur Marigold. it might be hard to find, i dont know if its sold in regular pharmacies. this herb is used by all Russian moms through the ages, you brew the herb (like tea) and pour it in the bath tub , let your baby sit there, absolutely safe and natural even if she swallows t or drinks it. 1-2 baths and the rash disappears like it was never there. it waorks like majic. i really recommend for anyone to try it, it amazing! i know its sold in Russian pharmacies (brooklyn and queens neigbrhoods) in russian its called Chereda.

My son has the same problem. Once he has diaper rash it doesn't ever seem to go away. I definitely like balmex better then desatin, it's thinker and stays on longer. But when his diaper rash gets bad I use this stuff called Triple Paste. I can only find it in Walmart. It's a little expensive but it works wonders. Also, there is an Aveeno baby wash (pink topped bottle) that has oatmeal in it. We fill the tub with water and give him a "bubble bath" with this stuff and pour in some baking powder. It helps to neutralize the acid on the skin and get rid of the rash. My doc's office has told me to give him a bath in this as much as 3 times a day. Her rash will be gone in no time.

she could be teething.. sometimes they will get a rash no matter how often you change her. when babies teeth their saliva produces more acid which is excreted in the urine which causes the blisters and rash which is very painful.. you can try different diaper rash creams to see which works best, try and get one that contains zinc oxide in it like a balmex or a+d ointment. I personaly prefer a+d because it wipes off a lot gentler than the balmex. you can also give her 2 baths during the days when she has it but only in warm water no need to wash her body(washing too much will make it worse and try not to use bubbles to much they can also aggrivate the situtaion, when she doesnt have a rash bubbles are fine) just like a nice soak and some tubby toys will keep her mind off it. you can also let her sit on the couch or in her chair without a diaper on and a towel under her in case she goes, to air out the tush.. that is the best thing for her.... i hope i have helped if you have any questions feel free to write me, i have lots of experience with daiper rash from teething. my daughter got the diaper rash from hell on the morning of christmas eve she was so miserable and it was soooo painful for her..
good luck hope she feels better soon.

Hello S.. My middle and last child ALWAYS got very bad diaper rash. Mostly diaper rashes that were combined with a yeast infection from being on continued antibiotics from recurrent ear infections. The rashes were as you explained open sores. I have tried a few things which REALLY helped before seeking a prescription from the pediatrician. There is a powder on the market for babies with rashes it is called Caldescene (pink bottle). This powder is wonderful and keeps everthing dry and moisture free. I have also used Aveeno Oatmeal baths for soaking (it promotes healing of the sores very quickly). I have also used Aloe plant (FANTASTIC MIRACLE WORKING PLANT). Also, Triple paste is very good to top it all off with.
Most important thing, keep her bottom dry with caldescene powder. Once I caught on to this powder it really stopped all the rashes in this house. Hope this helps! C.

My son also has very sensitive skin. He was in the hospital for the 1st four weeks of his life, and while he was there, developed some really bad diaper rash. The only thing that helped him without irritating his skin was Baby Aquaphor (I believe that's the correct spelling). It is made by Eucerin, but isn't sold everywhere. I know Walgreen's has it, and possibly Walmart, but not all food stores carry it. If you can't find the Baby Aquaphor, the original Aquaphor in a little jar is exactly the same thing. The only difference is that the baby kind is in a squeezable tube. I compared the ingredients, and they are exactly the same. There's no difference whatsoever. It's a little pricey, but it's completely worth it. My son's almost 9 months old and hasn't had diaper rash since he first came home. I use it all the time at every diaper change, and it seems to protect his delicate skin, plus it forms a barrier between his skin and the wetness in his diaper. You may also want to change the brand of diapers you use. Some pull away the wetness better than others. If all else fails, you may need to get a prescription diaper rash cream, and let her hiney air out for at least a half hour every few hours. Hope this helped.

My daughter had the same problem when she was a baby. I put desitin on religiously and sometimes, if it was really bad, I would let her crawl around for a bit without one. That really helps but can create a mess. I realized that the main cause of her rash was the wipes we were using. They really irritated her skin. What seemed to work best for us were Pampers Sensitive Wipes. I would also just use a wash rag and water when I had the chance. If you put the desitin on everytime, though, and get the right wipes, it should go away.

My little one would get a diaper rash so terrible that it would cause her skin to bleed. This also began around 15-16 months old. It took a while to find the source of the problem since the doctor wasn't sure either.

I would use Bordeaux's butt paste which helped and the Dr. gave me a cream to battle bacterial infection (fungus related, I think) caused by the moisture from the blisters. This at least cleared her up , but the rash would keep coming back. Then,I only used powder on her booty because it helped keep the area as dry as possible. The creams seemed to be helping and hurting at the same time. Powder on its own worked the best for my situation. As the blisters/skin became less oozing-like I used a bit of cream to heal the area.

I linked it to orange juice. She can eat fresh oranges or citris, but no juice. I think it's because the juice companies fortify the juices now with so many vitamins that her system couldn't deal with it. Anyway, since we've quit OJ, we've seen no more rashes. It also might have been set off by teething because she was giong through that at the same time.

Try a few methods and see what works on keeping the rash under control. Then, see if you can pin point the source. Hopefully your little one's rear will be better soon. Hang in there!

Hi S.,
My daughter also has sensitive skin and gets bad diaper rashes like you describe. I notice she really gets the rash bad after a bowel movement. If she's in it more than 30 seconds she gets a rash. I think what works the best is to let the diaper area air out. After her bath I let her run around without a diaper for a while and then put Triple Paste (and a diaper)on. The next morning she always looks much better. Also, the wipes irritate her skin so when it's really bad I use water and soft paper towels/washcloths for BMs, for pee I don't wipe at all. Hope this helps.

Try vasaline. My 3 year old daughter has very sensetive skin that all of the diaper rash creams on the market would only make it worse. She is allergic to something in them. I would put vasaline on her and by the next diaper change her rash would be almost gone.

I remember those days! It is heartbreaking to have to change a screaming baby's diaper. I am so glad that you found a solution that works for you. I would like to share my story with you. Both of my daughters, and I have very sensitive skin. The Pediatrician gave me all different types of persciptions, I tried every paste, lotion, and cream that my friends suggested, some worked, but the irritaion would always come back. My oldest daughter had to soak 3-4 times a week in warm water to ease her discomfort and irritation from wearing diapers. Even whe she potty trained and started wearing panties, she was always irriated. I found out that the soap and detergent that we use can sometimes irritate our skin, even if we use products made for sensitive skin for example: Dove for Sensitive Skin, Cetaphil, All Free and Clear, etc. I thought I was using the best products for sensitive skin, and I found out that what I was using was actually causing mine and my daughters sensitivities. A trusted friend introduced Melaleuca to me and I have been thanking her constantly ever since! Melaeuca is a company that makes all of the products that you use in your home and on your body, that are perfect for people with sensitivities. They use only naturally based, high quality ingredients that are thoroughly researched and safe for the enviornment. When I started to use these products, I noticed within days that I no longer needed my percription rash cream that I had used for over 15 years. My daughters skin wasn't as red or irritated. I had switched my soap, laundry detergent, and even the cleaner I used to clean the tub with and it all went away. My daughter hasn't been to the pediatrician about this issue since I changed what I was using. I treated the cause of our sensitivties not the symptoms, and we have been sensitivy free for over a year now. Thanks for listening to my story,
R.
I would love to give you the information about Melaleuca so you can decide if it is right for you and your family. Please email me at ____@____.com for more information.

Hey,

Just try to keep her bottom as dry as possible. Continue to change her more than often. Also, when you put on the rash cream you are using, if you are using one, make sure that before you put it on, you pat her bottom dry. Many intend to wipe thier bottom with a wipe, and then put on the rash cream not knowing that you are locking in the moisture and making it worse. Make sure to pat her bottom totally dry with a soft towel or spit up blanket( it may her her) and then put the rash cream on. It will keep her bottom dry and prevent any moisture from getting in. I did this and my daughters rash went away in a matter of 3 days. Hope this helps and keep us posted!

Be careful it isnt a yeast infection on her diaper area. My seventh son had a really bad rash and it got so bad it actually started to bleed in spots. I took him to the Dr. and found out it was a form of a yeast infection which required a perscribed cream. As children get older their urine is more irratating to the skin. Try letting her go with out a diaper as much as possible until it clears up. also
