Questions for Mamas with Naturally Curly Hair

I have very curly hair that is longer, about midway down my back. I am going camping next weekend and I'm wondering if I should straighten my hair since it would make life a lot easier. It will only be 2 days so I'm hoping I could maybe straighten it, then get by without having to wash it for the 2 days we're camping. It would be a lot less products to tote since I use a few different hair products on a daily basis for when I leave it curly. I also would need my hairdryer and curling iron. And from what I hear, the bathrooms are a long way from camp, so it probably wouldn't be very convenient to go through all the trouble with washing/styling my hair. So I really want to avoid washing my hair if I can.

So for all you curly mamas - would you recommend leaving the hair curly and maybe there are different products to use to maintain a non frizzy, stylish curly hairdo. Or would you recommend straightening the curly hair?

If you straighten - what products do you use? What is your process to straighten? I have a CHI so I would be using that. The couple times I have straighten my hair, I let it completely air dry curly, then straighten. Instead of blow drying it dry/straight.

Any tips? Thank you!!

What can I do next?

We go camping a lot and I shower the day we leave and wear my hear down and from then on I either braid it or put it in a pony tail. I used to worry about looking "rough" while camping, until I finally realized that I will probably never see those people( other campers) again and just enjoy myself. Have a great time! :)

My hair is VERY naturally wavy. But not as long as yours--shoulder lengthish.
IF I was going camping for 2 days (which would never happen) I would take clips, headbands and elastic hair bands AND a hat.
Even if I straighten my hair (which I do), once I sleep on it, it's basically wrecked the next morning & needs "remodeling"!

As someone who has camped for 43 years now -- AND has curly/wavy hair -- I'd throw it in a ponytail and be done with it. This is much too much work for "roughing it." This sounds like something I did way back in my teens when I was camping and "looking good" was of utmost importance, lol :)

Okay I am having trouble wrapping my brain around caring what I look like when camping. Let your poor hair be free!! I never wear product when camping, sure I look like a frizzy mess but I will even if I straighten it.

I guess my idea of camping is letting your hair down so I would clean all the product out and keep it up in a messy bun.

Mine is fairly long curly hair.

I have naturally curly hair and I would definitely straighten for your camping trip.
I use Moraccan Oil after my shower, before I blow dry it straight with a round brush. Then I either use a flat iron or a 2" curling iron. I also use #07 (Redken) that I spray on my hair before ironing.
Take a hat and wear it the 2nd day of camping if you need to. I tend to wear hats in the woods anyway and don't really "do" my hair when camping.

Hi there! I have curly hair as well. The humidity does a number on it as well. I would recommend straightening it. I actually would go to your stylist and have her/him do it for you. Mine does it for $12 & it looks great. I can go almost 5 days w/o washing it b/c it is so dry. I use a Chi and use the Its a 10 spray conditioner. Good luck camping!

My hair is almost to my waist, so the curls are more like waves now unless I saturate with product, and I refuse to do that when I camp. I am lucky that I can blow dry it out to straighten it, but I don' bother when I camp. I just was it before I go, and bring a brush and lots of hair ties. The way I figure it, I'm camping and I should look like it. I also don't use any product when I camp because it attracts bugs, and they like my blood enough without me adding any enticing smells to sweeten me up for them.

Wash and straighten before you go for sure. Since you have longer hair, I'd keep it French braided, in a pony-tail, or pig tails for control (both bugs and humidity). As other's have said, a cute ball cap during the day might be a nice touch and an easy weather protectant as well if it should rain or be waaay too sunny and hot.

For emergency-sake, you may still want to bring along a good brush, hair binders or a clip, and one styling product anyway. For instance, a leave-in anti-frizz serum (any products with Moraccan Argon oil are great, but perfumey!), curl pudding (Miss Jesse's at Target is great for controlled natural looks!) or some type of leave-in conditioner/cream (I like John Frieda) to get things under control if humidity is a problem and you need to tidy up, or you wind up having to get your hair wet anyway. You wouldn't want to go unprepared if something unexpected should happen. But I definitely think going into it with straightened hair would be waaay easier than messing with the curls while on the trip.

I have crazy curly hair and YES straighten it before you go!! Life will be sooo much easier for you while your camping!!

Just straighten it the morning before you go, or the night before, and put in some straightening hair product. BioSilk makes some great products they can be a little more money. Like $10 for a bottle but it's worth it.

Just take that with you, and a brush and you should be good to go!

Have fun!!

I reccomend you wash your hair the day/morning you go - put in your typical products - then bring a spray bottle with you and just a mousse (Tresseme for curls is GREAT!) and your other products will be fine. Stick with a nice French Braid and a headband or something like that and enjoy camping. I NEVER worry about my hair when camping - it goes in a nice French Braid or Dutch Braid and I am "over it." You do not need to tote a ton of products - just a few hair bands, a comb, mousse and a spray water bottle and maybe a few bobby pins to add volume at the top or a headband.

Oh and if you do not want to "touch up" your hair then have your stylist straighten it for you - I do not know what she does differently than me, but my girl can flat iron my hair and make it last for DAYS - I just dry shampoo it on day 3 and I have to wash by day 4 :(

I also bring some "curl controller goop" from my hairdresser....put that on and then wear a headband. I would just skip straightening it - it is gonna be curly - first time it gets wet.

I'm ex military, and have camped for weeks for fun.

I start of straight, and bring a bottle of gel. First time I get wet (swimming, rain, wash, etc.... I just throw gel in it and brush wet and. Braid. Finis. I never bother to straighten while camping.
