I have a 3 yr old who has been potty trained for about 6 months and doing well. I have him sit down to do #1, but need to start introducing him to standing up. He doesn't want to do it though. How do you get your boy to stand up? Any advice on how to not make a mess would be greatly appreciated as well!

I don't think they ever learn how to not make a mess! LOL

My son is six, and while he was being potty-trained, the men in his life (his father and grandfathers) would let him go into the bathroom with them - he got to see the boys standing up. He also followed me and my mom and sisters in, so saw that the girls sat down. He was about 2.5 when we did that... it worked... he only sits for #1 early in the morning when he isnt awake yet. You can try getting targets for him to aim for in the potty... now that my son is older, I remind him to aim for the hole in the bottom of the bowl.... but... well... let's just say the huge container of lysol wipes stays in HIS bathroom, and the rugs get washed at least every other week!! lol

Put cheerios in the toilet as "targets" asnd have him aim. Seriously it works great.

I haven't gone through potty training with my son yet, but a co-worker mentioned a potty training urinal. It might cut down on the mess a little. If your interested www.pottytrainingconcepts.com is a pretty interesting site.

My first thought/question is, why do you want him to stand? I'm in the process of training my teenager to sit!!! :-) It makes such a mess when they stand. The only reason they need to stand is if they are at a urinal, and that won't be for awhile for your boy.

That being said, when I first potty trained said teenager, he responded really well to cheerios floating in the toilet. It gave him something to aim at. There are also flushable targets you can buy to put in there for them to aim at, but I don't know where to get them. Cheerios were cheaper. Hope this helps!

My son is potty trained and just over a month shy of turning 3. He sat down for the first few months he was potty trained as well and then he wanted to try one time standing up and there was no going back to sitting to pee. It was his choice in his time. I'd just let it go...let him do as he wants...like you alluded to, it's often less messy when they are sitting to pee anyway. :)
