How to Teach Your Boy to Pee Standing Up

Hi moms,

Here is another PT question. My son is doing well with his Potty training. He just turned 3. He usually will tell us about number 2 and sometimes number 1. I usually have to ask though. He has been sitting down, usually on his potty. He can and does use the big toilet though. I want to obviously get him to go standing up eventually. When did you start introducing this and how did you transition for sitting to standing?

What can I do next?

We're potty training my boy now too, and he went to the bathroom with Daddy a couple times. I was sitting on the couch and overheard my little man in the bathroom with dad exclaiming "WHOA DADDY!! You've got a HUGE weiner!!". he then went around telling everyone about Daddy's big weiner for the next week or so!

I guess the norm is to stand, but honestly...one of the best traits I ever found in my hubby is that when he is not in a public bathroom he sits. He does it out of courtesy for whoever cleans the bathroom. I LOVE IT! I have two sons and a husband who all have no problem with aim or "floor polishing." I also don't have to worry about them leaving the seat up.

It's always been a game at our house. You place a cheerio in the toilet and tell them to hit the cheerio. Works every time.

My son turns 5 next month and I've let him take the lead on that. He potty trained at 2 1/2 and has been sitting down the whole time to pee. Which was fine by me because I'd watch him pee standing up and he didn't have the skills to keep it in the potty!!! lol He started to take an interest in standing when he started pre k and saw other boys doing it.

Good luck

My son just turned 3 in March and has been standing to pee for about 2 months. Daddy took him to the museum and in the bathrooms he watched him stand to use the urinal and has been standing ever since. He will want to do it when he is ready and watches his daddy do it.

when he's tall enough to be able to do it without stress.

When my boys began standing up, it did help to watch Daddy.....& to aim at Cheerios floating in the toilet! Peeing on trees is also helpful.....

Have him lean over toilet and hold on to back of it. If he's tall enough ahve him stand on floor. Otherwise get a step stool (they have some by potty chairs at target). When the boys at daycare start standing that's what I do and when they start aiming all over the place on purpose that's when I move them to the floor if I haven't already. If he's a little leery of it have him sit backwards for awhile (will have to take pants all the way off). good luck!

My nephew showed my son how to do it while playing outside in our backyard! I wouldn't recommend that, but what's done is done. He could watch Daddy. You could toss some Cherrios in the toilet and tell him to aim. He'll think it's a great game!

Honestly, what's your hurry? The bathroom is so much cleaner when he sits down. He'll pick it up. I wouldn't be too concerned.

My son potty trained right after his 3rd bday. He peed sitting down for just over two months before he switched to standing. After that, he went back and forth for several weeks before standing consistently.

To teach him to do it, have him watch someone else - daddy, a brother, any male in his life. You can also put cheerios in the toilet and have him aim for them.

My son was too small to stand and reach the toilet when he was first trained. He's 5 now and will stand at any public bathroom but likes to sit at home. I tried cheerios as a target at first but it worked better to draw a boat on a square of TP (with a sharpie) and tell him to sink the boat. It was easy too because there is always TP in a bathroom.

the teachers at my sons school taught him to stand on his step stool, lean forward and hold onto the top of the lid of the toilet. it made such a difference in ease of going potty for him. the position naturally aims it down and he can still see what he's doing (do you use toilet targets? that's a big hit, we do Cheerios in the potty to aim for) he did that for about 2-3 months and just now is learning how to aim. dad took him into the mens room and introduced the urinal - my son is over the moon LOL.

My son learned to stand by watching his older cousin who I babysat. He never sat down to pee. Have him watch daddy or another boy relative and he should pick it up pretty quickly.
