I am 36 weeks pregnant and have been advised by my OB to choose a peditrician. I have had 3 referrals - Rocky Mountain Youth Clinic (Dr. Joe Craig & Dr. Karin Sigdestad), Dr. Gita Sikand and Dr. Sona Shaw at Indian Crest. Does anyone use any of these? Have any opinion on the doctors or office staff?
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your expert mom advise. I have appointments set up Tuesday to meet with a few of the doctors that actually have "meet the doctor" appointments before the baby arrives. Suprisingly not all would schedule time with me since my baby had not arrived yet! That narrowed down the field!
Thank you again!

Hi S.. My name is L.. I have a 5 yr old little girl and we have been seeing Dr. Sikand since Day 1. Her staff is amazing! She seems a little harsh at first, but she really is just a great doctor and is great with children. The thing I like best about the office is the staff. They are all really nice and helpful and NEVER rude.

Also, I go to Rocky Mountain Health myself and they seem to be really good with kids there from what I've seen. I haven't had my daughter seen there but its always been an option. As far as the staff at Rocky Mountain. They are also nice and quick. They have been really good at getting me in quickly when I was sick.

I wouldn't reccommend Indian Crest Peds, I've dealt with some very insensitive and money hungry people there.
I live in Thornton also, and take my kids to Dr. Donna Ackerman, she is at 92nd & Huron in the Rocky Mountain health Care office, she is wonderful and I've had my kids with her for many years. She has 3 boys herself, so check her out if your looking for someone fairly close.
Good luck!

We use Broomfield pediatrics on 120th near Sheridan. They will soon have a new office however on 144th. We see Dr. Palazarri, but have seen 2 others in the proactice as well. The wait times are minimal if any. Most of the time the nurse is wainting on me to sign in. They have toys in the rooms which makes any wait more pleasant also. Good luck.

also I have just transefered back home after being away from family for 6 years. I know what it is like an disolating it can feel especailly right after baby. Please don't hesitate to call for any advise, night out, or play date. I have a three year old boy and an eight month old boy. We live off of 136th and Colo Blvd. ____@____.com

Take care, S.

Hello, my son is now 2 and has seen both Dr.Sikand and Dr.Craig, and I have had issues with both of them and have worked in the medical field for several years. The problem with Dr. Craig's office is that for major appointments like shots, or something scheduled in advance they can only accomodate your schedule i believe after 12 or 1pm, nothing prior as the morning is reserved for people calling that day to get their babies in for colds and things of that nature, which sometimes actually works out ok when you baby has the sniffles or you want to just check something out, however, if your a working mom and dad hard to plan your schedule around appts ranging from 1-4, the office was very small and every time you are seen you first see somebody who is doing their internship, they assess then the real dr comes in (takes forever!) and then the dr asks the intern questions and just a lot of unneccessary time spent.

Dr. Zikand office the billing department is extremely rude and when I came upon several mistakes in their billing I was yelled at and was treated with great disrespect, the front desk is ok , Dr.Sikand is very nice and good with the children, hopefully if you choose her you have good insurance coverage for well baby checks (shots etc) because according to my insurance they charge very high rates for immunizations and office visits.

The pediatrician I have been most content with is Dr. Donna Ackerman her office is with Dr. Azarcon and Dr. Flanigan on 92nd and Huron. She is a single mom and very sweet and really knows her stuff, she found a major heart condition in my cousins child in her first well baby check up and two days later she was scheduled for necessary surgery that would in the end save her life, so that definitely impressed me!

Hope this all helps!

We had our baby at North Suburban and decided to go with Rock Mountain Youth clinic. The doctors are nice, but the facility and the staff are not. We had a few terrible experiences there. We now go to Horizon Pediatrics and see Dr. Williams, its just on 104th and Steele (by the 3 margaritas restaurant). If you go in, they always call and check on you the next day. Good Luck!

Hello S.,
I was also in your situation. My husband and I moved to Thornton 2 years ago. We have a beautiful little girl who at the time was 6 months old. The first pediatrician I went to was horrible. At the time we were having problems with our pets and in an conversation with our vet she recommended me to Arvada Pediatric, Dr. Brucker. They are located in Broomfield, off 120th ###-###-####). Not sure where you are in Thornton, but its really not that far. I live off 136th & I-25 and it takes me maybe 20 minutes. I know that sounds crazy to get a referral from your vet, but we were having problemes with our other kids and with just moving here I felt really comfortable with here. She takes here kids there and absolutely loves it. I REALLY like Dr. Brucker, after the last place she was a dream come true. Everyone is very patient with you and very helpful and most importantly on time. The phone nurse is so nice and helpful.. She has been mom away from home. All of our family are in the midwest. Good luck, I know this can be a hard decision when it come to finding some one you like and can feel comfortable with.

As a doula, I think choosing your pediatrician at this point is a great idea! My biggest recommendation is to interview. Call the office and tell them your pregnant and looking for peds and they will make you an appointment just for an interview. Then you need to come up with questions that are important to you (vaccines, breastfeeding, etc.) and see if their philosophies match up with yours. When you find someone you like, the other thing to do is ask if they have hospital privledges where you are birthing. Not all docs get to go to every hospital. I wish you luck and let me know if you need anymore help!

S.,

I used to take my son to Indian Crest. They are great. I used to see a physicians assistant there named Mark Coloton.(sp?) He was great. He is very down to earth and not so "by the book" as some medical professionals tend to be. He is much more of a "trust your own knowledge of your kids" kind of practitioner. Dr. Sona Shaw was good the one time we saw her too. They also run very much on time in that office. I don't know how important that is to you, but they always had me in an exam room on time and listened to my concerns.

Good luck!

We had our son at North Suburban and we met Dr. Knott with Indian Crest Pediatrics. We have two older children and we used to drive out to Wheat Ridge for all of their appointments and we have now changed to Indian Crest Peds. We have been really happy with them. My son is 9 months old and has had a rough winter with colds. Every time I called I was seen right away and they really cared about what was going on with him. I have had billing issues with them and the problem was resolved promptly. We have seen Dr. Shaw and Dr. Knott and we love them both.

My daughter goes to Rocky Mountain Youth Pediatrics. I love Dr. Craig. He is always completely up-to-date on the latest studies regarding children's health issues. HOWEVER, it is tough to get a same day appointment. You have to call right at 8:00 and the lines are constantly busy. By the time you get through, the appointments are all gone. You can make an appointment one week in advance for physicals and shots. Those appointments can be any time during the day -- not necessarily in the afternoon. You can also call in the afternoon for a next morning appointment. But that whole thing is a drag. I've found the staff to always be friendly. Never had a problem.

Good luck.

When I lived in Thornton I took my boys to Gita Sikand at Denver Pediatrics. The whole staff was great and I miss them!! Gita is very direct and to the point. She's Indian, I believe (from India, not Native American) and at times is hard to understand with her heavy accent, but she's very professional. They're great at getting you in within 15 minutes of a phone call for a sick visit. They were always willing to see both my boys in one visit to save an office trip, also. I would highly recommend them, and should I move back to the Denver area, I will definitely go back to them.

I take my son to Indian Crest Pediatrics and love it! We see Dr. Barbe most of the time, but have seen both Dr. Knot and Dr. Shaw and like them also. The thing I like best about the practice is their willingness to be flexible on the vaccination issue. I have my son on a delayed vaccination schedule and have had no pressure to bring him up to date with the "recommended schedule". They give us information and let us make the decisions. One other great thing is that they are always on time!

I had my daughter at North Suburban, and they suggested Arvada Pediatrics North on 121st in Broomfield. It's less than a mile north of 120th right off Lowell. Dr. Hermann is great, and so is Dr. Kessler. The office is well organized and efficient. The staff have been pleasant. I highly recommend them.

I am a mom of a 4 year old boy and expecting a girl in July who I will be taking to Indian Crest, I have been taking my son to Indian Crest and seeing Dr. Shah since he was born. I am also a pharmacy student who recently did a rotation with Dr. Shah and Dr. Knott so I got to work with them both for 2 weeks. They are both great pediatricians and truly care about the kids and it shows when you see them with the children. They are extremly knowledgeable about all aspects of medicine and leave decisions ultimately up to the parents. They would welcome you to schedule an appointment with them now and learn about their practice before you make a decision as we had a pregnant woman and her husband come in just for that while I was working with them. They also have another physician, Dr. Barbe who is good as well, and they have a Physicians Assistant Dr. Colloton who I like too. They get you in right away and have a call back nurse working at all times for any questions you might have. I would recommend you meet with them before your baby is born to decide for yourself what you think. If you have any other questions let me know. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!
