Tonight my daughter, who is 9 yrs. old, pulled her tooth out, not really feeling any pain, despite the large amount of blood, and the long size of the root was about the length of my fingernail. Dx with ASD. This does not look or seem Normal??!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm sorry...I was asking for advice? I just cleaned her all up, having her rinse her mouth, dab with peroxide, phoned PCP, realized gums appeared a bit swollen??? PCP said to call Dentist...( it stop bleeding, big hole though...). .she has an airway, she is breathing, and she is conscious. I will call him in the morning and be sure to repost when I have an idea to what's going on. :-)

Ok so thank you for all of the responses. I do appreciate everyone that took the time to write your thoughts. I do believe my husband and I were extremely shocked that our daughter extracted her own -on top- 3rd one from center dead center left, it was a baby tooth with a large root that had not been hallowed out. We understand she has a very high pain tolerance. I did call her dentist, they explained , this tooth can have a large root, and its ok and normal. .
Now, When this happened we had put her to bed, and she comes in our room and says: " I had something stuck in my teeth, I was trying to get it out I heard a crack and pulled it out Mommy." Saying this with a mouth full of blood.

I do believe that one was just a moment of : visually in disbelief, it looked so much worse then what it really was.

Thank you all.

I have known kids to lose a tooth root and all, doesn't happen often and I would imagine I would freak a bit if it happened to one of my kids.

I don't think it has anything to do with being spectrum. My son lost all his teeth in the usual manner.

I also want to add no one can pull a tooth out with just their hands unless that tooth is already loose. I would be more concerned as to whether there is a bacterial infection attacking the teeth. Not being the best tooth brushers, that seems common with spectrum.

you know which of her teeth have fallen out already, right? so is this a permanent tooth? it doesn't sound like a baby tooth with a root that long. but of course pulling out a permanent tooth is not normal at all.
so, if this is a baby tooth, no biggie.
if it's a permanent tooth, get her to a dentist ASAP.

We have a friend with an autistic child who did the same thing. He pulled 2 front teeth for no apparent reason. He does not have a pain threshold and apparently neither does your daughter. You need to be aware of this because she could injure herself other ways and not be aware of it. Hopefully you have been to see a pediatric dental surgeon. In our friends case, they have had to do several dental procedures over several months (to let healing occur) in order to replace the tooth. Good luck.

What exactly is your question? You're concerned the tooth has a root or that your daughter pulled it out on her own? My special needs daughter (MOMR) has an EXTREMELY high pain tolerance, so for her, this would be "normal" and would not phase her. I guess all you can do is check with the dentist asap. Good luck.

Normal. Kids teeth at this age are bigger because they've been in their mouth longer. If it's a permanent tooth you need to see a dentist. If it's a baby tooth then I wouldn't worry. Ask at her next 6 mo. check up.

If the tooth was not loose to begin with and she pulled it with a tool or something, that is a pediatric dental emergency. In cases like that, you don't clean up anything, you just get to the dentist immediately.

If it was loose and the root simply didn't fully dissolve, then it is probably a non issue even with the blood. My younger kid tends to be a bleeder when a loose tooth comes out.

For future reference, you don't want to use peroxide for something like this, or for open wounds in general. It can make swelling worse and damages healthy tissue.

Which tooth is it? My daughter has her canines pulled and I was amazed that the teeth still had large roots attached. So if it is one of those teeth it is normal.

If the tooth was loose and ready to come out this seems normal to me. I don't remember seeing a root however. Good to call the dentist.

I never saw a baby tooth with a root. I would follow up with a dentist.
