Can anyone tell me at what age their son started having puberty issues, mainly under arm body odor?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the good info. I had a talk with my son about how to properly bathe and to scrub a little more in those "important" spots. He smells much better and just for kicks if we are going to any where he thinks he might be embarassed by sweating and getting smelly he puts on some deoderant.

My son started using antiperspirant when he was in 4th grade - age 10. Pretty normal - more young boys need someone else to tell them to do so!

I started having puberty issues at the age of 9. Well thats when I got my period. I was developing before that. Get some deoderant for him and all should be good. You dont want him to be the stinky kid at school. Also give him the sniff test after a shower, hair body. My brother and my cousin both just got there hair wet and nothing else. They just acted like they took a shower. EWW! Good luck.

My 8 year old nephew has B.O. already. You know, they say that kiddos are going through hormonal stuff earlier, so I'm sure this is within that scope.

how old is your son. girls generally go into puberty at 12 your son shouldnt be going into it at least at 14. he might have a high toxicity level. take him to central market and tell them, they can probably find something perfect for him to clean his syte out. totally safe and no side effects unlike the doctors.

I bet if you checked with some of your friends they would all tell you that there is nothing like that sweaty little boy smell. For some reason little boys can really get rank. Some little girls also, but more boys. Just be sure that when they bath they really use the soap instead of just get it wet. Ha mine tried that trick.

Its probably not puberty but my older son's started to smell once they hit around 6 or 7. Just make sure they shower daily and you can have him start wearing deodorant.

Good luck.

I thought I would add my "2 cents" ;-) My son is 6 and just recently he started with the underarm bo. He says that he thinks he gets it from some of the other boys and girls he sits next to at school after recess. Because he says they all smell too. :-) So after his shower we have been having him put baby powder under his arms. Or as he calls it "fresh powder" he doesn't like "baby" :-) I think the deodorant is way to extreme at this age. After reading some of the post though I might go ahead and take him to the Dr. to make sure there is nothing else going on there. :-)

My son was 5 when the BO started. The doctor told me to use the teen deoderant, because it isn't as strong. He is 11 now and we have to use the adult clinical strength on him. He comes by it naturally though, because my sister and I had the same problem when we were young.

Our boys are 9 and I would say they are very PrePubecent! They have been wearing deodarant for about 2 yrs now! I noticed the smells after school and being out playing in the heat also with boys alot of the time they dont wash properly so you kinda have to check behind the ears and neck and all that and there have been times i have sent them back into the shower. I think with all the growth hormones and what not that is out there in our foods nowadays our children are going thru things alot sooner in life than kids in past times! My one son has underarm hair its only a few but its there and he has a slight mustache so dont rule anything out LOL... You may want to start having the "smell talk" with him. That hes getting older and when he gets older he has to use other things to help control smells IE Deoderant! yada yada yada...

Hi, my son had it at age 5 1/2 ! His underarm smell was enough to make your eyes water. :))
Every night during bath time now instead of me trying to wash his armpits ( he'd squirm around laughing because he said it tickled him too much - which made it difficult to wash them ) I'd hand him the hand towel lathered up with soap and have HIM wash his own armpits. Which makes it less ticklish.
We haven't had to use anything else so far.
It really surprised me that he had underarm BO at such a young age though.
Good luck , I'm sure its all normal.

Morning C.;

Check your diet!! Remove all foods with spices for example
galic!
Takes about 2 weeks for spices to pass thru system. If he
still has bad body odor after two weeks, take him to a doctor!
Good Luck,

My son had it off and on since he was about 7. It hit full time around 4th grade. Let him pick out some deoderant and possibly a body spray that he likes. Make sure you talk to him about hygene and why it's important. Honestly, my son took it more seriously when his dad chatted with him about it and helped him pick out his deoderant. Just remember, you'll probably have to continue to remind him to use it every day.

My daughter (now 9) started developing BO at about the same age. When she was 7 1/2, I noticed she was growing underarm and pubic hair. I took her to the doctor right away, he ran a bunch of tests and couldn't find anything wrong. I happened to mention during a visit that my mother has hypothyroidism. He sent us straight to a pediatric endocrinologist and guess what, my daughter inherited my mother's thyroid disease. Her thyroid gland wasn't producing enough hormone, so her pituitary gland was working overtime trying to stimulate it, so that is why she started having signs of early puberty. We got her on thyroid replacement and her development slowed down--the BO doesn't even seem as bad anymore. So, I guess what I'm saying is get him checked out, because there could be something going on with him hormonally. Good luck!

my 7 yr old has it too and so have other 7-8 yr old kids of my friends. i just make him shower every day. i would only use all natural deodorant from the health food store if you really want to, but it's better as long as he just showers daily. Not a big deal and is normal. I was surprised too.
