My Daughter was diagnosed with a low white blood cell count and a low neutrophil count. That was over a month ago now. So the thought she had virus supression with an antibody that was causing the low count; however, they retested her the other day and said her count was at 500 and has not dropped or gone up in 3 weeks. They are sending us to a hematologist but my question is anyone have expiernce with this..
The weird thing is in the past month she has been overall healthy. In the past she has had alot of infections (ear mostly) and has had generally been sick quite a bit.

What can I do next?

Hi,
My daughter also had a low Absolute Netrophil Count (ANC) when she was about 18 months old. Also called neutropenia. However, her ANC was never lower than 1000 (normal is above 1500) and she never showed any other symptoms of having an immune disorder and after months of regular blood tests, we stopped checking. If you search for neutropenia on the internet you should find some good information. I think it's good that you're going to a specialist. I'm sorry I couldn't provide more help. I hope your little one is okay. We'll pray for you.

There could be a number of reasons why your daughters counts are low and even though the waiting game is terrible that's what your going to have to do now, just wait to see what the hematologist says and then get a second opnion to be sure.

My 4 month old has the same exact thing. When he was born, his white blood cell/neutraphils were so low, they treated him for an infection in the NICU, but it never went up. We regularly see a hematologist, but his white blood cell count remains very low (around 700). At first I researched neutrapenia on the internet, only to completely devestate myself. I had myself so freaked out about him catching something, that I didn't let anyone see him ever and we never left the house except for doctors appts until just recently. But the doctors finally told me to treat him like my other children...and he hasn't gotten sick yet. They said he could be like this forever or grow out of it eventually. Let me know how things go with the hematologist and let me know what they tell you...I am totally looking for advice as well. I go to the doctors at Banner Desert and absolutely LOVE them.

Hi SR,

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I know it must be very difficult for you as a parent, not knowing what is going on.

The bottom line is she has a suppressed immune system. So, the question is, "How did it get suppressed?" Some things to look at are...

~what laundry, cleaning, and personal care products you use,
~other environmental factors like bedding, carpet, paint, mold
~preservatives and dyes in her diet
~sugar and carb consumption
~prepared drink consumption (soda, sports drinks, juice, etc...)

There are several other factors; but the above are basics to start from. If you would like help with this process, please feel free to call my office. I'm also happy to provide you with referrals to doctors who specialize in blood therapies and acute disorders.

I am not sure of you saw my problem listed over the weekend. I have low blood counts all the time (3 - 3.5). I recently had a bout with something that I am seeing another hemotologist to figure out what's wrong. But I will tell you what the last hemo dr. told me is that some people just have low whites. It's like having freckles. There is no cause for alarm, if it's not less than 3.0. Still,I would rule out blood disporders and sinus problems (such as abnormal tonsils, adenoids, etc. that woudl cause infections). I would get a second option as so far, I am not impressed with doctors in general. I can email you the hemo dr.'s name I will see tomorrow, if I end up liking him. The last one was a joke.

I just had the same thing happen with my daughter at 6 mo. They did the tests twice and they came back low and then sent us to the hemotologist as well. They said it was nothing to worry about with emmalee but it took a month or so before we were reassured by the hemotologist that it was probably just a bug. Although the reason we checked her count was because she wasn't eating for two days, she never seemed to be sick at all.

I am sure it will all be fine. The higher the count the more likely it is to be something serious.

As I was reading about your concern, I thought I needed to tell you of something that was introduced to me that helps to balance the immune. Juice Plus+ is fruits & veggies put into capsule form. I knew we didn't eat enough fruits & veggies & added it to our diet. The more I've learned about what fruits & veggies can do for the body, I am blown away at the power they have on our health.... so just thought I should share w/ you that info. if you want to try to help boost your daughters immune system to help fight whatever she is dealing w/. The U of A did a study on Juice Plus+ to see how it affected the immune system & it showed that it really does boost the immune system. If you want to see more of the research behind the product you can go to jphealth.net/C. Blessings....
